Cayman s. I’m new to this, please help

Hi all and happy new year, I’m looking at buying my first Cayman s 987 2006, it ticks all the boxes for me, But I haven’t brought a 2nd hand car for over 20 years as i drive a company van. In the back of my head I’m thinking I’m buying someone’s troubles.

its from a small dealer he is selling nice cars and it comes with a warranty, have you got any tips on what to look for or should i get RAC to look over it, i know nothing about engines its done 105 k that looks about norm for the age. Any help would be great

I suppose the first question is service history? Who serviced, when etc.  

 

Is there any evidence of work having been carried out by previous owners? There will be several things that will have needed doing by this point.

For a relatively small amount of money.  I would get an independent inspection from a Porsche specialist, not the RAC or AA.

 

Last thing I heard, £200 - 300 was the going rate.  That was in the North West though.

Can I ask how much the dealer is asking for an 06 with that mileage?

 

i purchased an 07 with 67k for 15.5k last year which maybe a comparasion for you.

Thanks for that, it has full service History by Porsche and a reconditioned gearbox not sure who don’t that yet will get an independent person to take a look over it 

 

He wants £12999.00 by but I’m getting with a warranty and £ 11000.00 if it all looks good once I’m there

Full Porsche history is good, particularly at that age. 

 

I’d definitely check the gearbox work though, I’ve never heard of a Cayman needing one...

Hi Eon. You've agreed a deal at £11K then?

 

Sounds like a good deal if the car is straight.

Hi Havard. I now have a doubt in my mind about the gearbox, I thought if its been reconditioned that was a good thing and the dealer giving me a warranty so i just need to make sure it covers all the main bits, but I’m glad for the doubts as this is why i joined  CaymanOC as you guys been there and got the T shirt

Hi Eon. things to look out for on a 987 with this mileage. front coffin arms, track rod ends. both easy to check as you will feel play in the steering when you test drive it. emulsified gunk round the oil filler indicating water in the oil probably from the water cooled oil cooler that are known to corrode. corroded and blocked front rads leads to coolant leaks and a running temp of over 80 on the temp gauge, check and smell coolant levels. noisy or clunky shocks. clutch wear (on a manual gearbox)= high biting point on pedal and clutch slip. drive slippage during gearchanges on Tiptronic autobox =torqueconvertor or lowTQF. noisy dual mass front pulley. clicking valve clearances. look for puff of smoke on startup. this is totally normal but should not last more than a couple of seconds, if it continues, and gets worse, walk away. gravel rash on the front and frunk lid is normal and may have been touched up or re-sprayed already. condensation inside or damp carpets inc door bottoms might be door window issues and door drain blockages. gear levers can get sloppy

it all sounds bad but really isn't. Caymans are well engineered and beautifully built, far better than most, but any car that has done over 100k miles and is 11 years old is not going to be perfect. my advice,for what it is worth, is to take another Porsche owner ( Boxsters or 911s are very similar and share a lot of the same parts so also have similar problems) or take an old school mechanic with you to the viewing.

£11K is a great price, that's what I paid for mine and it now has 120000 miles on it, gets driven every day. in all weathers and makes me grin every time I turn the key.

good luck and don't be afraid to seek more advice, either from these guys in the OC or other Porsche forums. after all you can never have too much information

In addition to the good advice above, a couple of other things to check or be budgeting for include:

 

- Brake discs - they can look fine on the outside but often wrecked on the inside faces.

- Air con condensers - they are pretty exposed and also suffer from leaves and other muck getting sandwiched between them and the coolant rads.  I'd be amazed if they're original and still intact.

-  Coolant pipes, especially the ones at the front of the car - the Henn quick fit couplings corrode where they connect to the aluminium pipes that run underneath the steering rack.  You can't really see much externally (other than signs of leakage) but this is what they look like if you can get them apart.

However, don't let most of this put you off, especially if you are handy with the spanners as most of these issues are fairly easy to DIY.  The potential for bore scoring is the one to worry about. 

 

The best advice I can offer on that is to get it borescoped before purchase (though that may not be conclusive) or buy one from an OPC or a dealer that offers a cast iron warranty against bore scoring (many warranties probably won't cover this).  Otherwise, buy privately from a long term owner who can give you a good idea about oil consumption and the trend (and who you are prepared to trust !).

It’s putting me off a bit, lol, thanks for all the advice i have found a company that do over 350 checks they have a good Wight up, the Bore thing is worrying me the most as i think i will only be able to get this done once i have the car, I will speak to the company that carry out all the other checks for advice

Try Peter Morgan's old Business, they definitely did borescope checks for customers.  I believe he has sold the business but it's still well regarded in Porsche circles

The gearbox work is likely to be ok and if done well could be a bonus, just needs some explanation or provenance so you have piece of mind.

All the above is sound advice. I bought mine being second hand car savvy but by no means did it mean I was Porsche savvy.

the best advice is to buy well within budget and have a contingency in place to manage issues. These are thorough bred vehicles and repairs are eneviatble and costly.

Bore Scope for £100 at Revolution Porsche confirmed mine had had liners so it's a must check thing as it's a costly repair. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend on mine to fully renovate the issues that could be of concern but I t didn't come cheap but for me as I will be a long term keeper of my 987 G1 was worth the investment. 

I will say that even though I've spent a lot on her, she makes me grin like an idiot every time I look at her never mind drive her. 

If you can deal with the realisation you are buying a second hand vehicle that may need money spent then you won't regret it.

i didn’t go with my 1st choice of Cayman i went to have a look at it and it all looked good But the dealer wasn’t happy to let me have an independent inspection so i side stepped it.

Im happy to say I brought a 56 plate silver 3.4 987Cayman S, very happy a dealer in Lincoln full Porsche Service History with an extra one before I took it away i have a 6 month gold warranty inspection by RAC, it all that I thought it would be. Big thank you to all @ Cayman OC for all the heads up 

I’ve ordered my sticker for my window and look forward to a meet up soon

I have got a question, so my Cayman has the standard Porsche satnav in it which I’m looking at either a disk upgrade as it 10 years old and there’s lots of roads that aren’t on it

I brought a FM modulator so i can play my music on that work really well only cost me £16 

Or do i change the hole head unit to bring it into the 21st century 

not really bothered about satnav as i have an iPhone and i can use that 

my main problem that I didn’t even think about taking calls while driving, i could see a phone symbol lol I didn’t even give a thought that it didn’t have Bluetooth but it has a sim slot..

what do you guys use as a hands free in car. I don’t actually use my phone while driving but i just like to have something in place

Mmm... I bought my MY2006 Cayman S (with a private plate) only last week (privately) 3/4 Porsche history with a couple of specialist independants - 3 owners - 61k miles for £12 grand ;-) Would never buy from a "Stealer" but that's just how I roll ;-)

I binned (well, put it in the garage) the Porsche head unit... Even the top spec Bose isn't all that tbh... Just fitted a Pioneer DVD head unit with built in Bluetooth & music streaming & USB etc... Much better sound & funtionality...
