I was just wondering if it could be something like a dying (but not dead) o2 sensor screwing up the fuelling and leading to a lack of power.

I'm also going to ask a really dumb question (if you need help sucking eggs, just let me know!) but were you running it on 98+ Ron fuel when you had it on the dyno? If you run it on normal fuel, it will adjust the timing, and you'll get less power... Exactly as you describe

Most premium unleaded is only 97 Ron these days so it would not be unheard of. I think only optimax and tesco momentum (good luck finding it) are 99 Ron now

I only ever run all my vehicles on Momentum or V-Power - but thanks !

Car is now booked in for Wed with my local indy who can do live fault finding.

Knock sensors, Air Flow meter, Lambda sensors have all been suggested.

Either way car has knocked back timing - seemingly to some sort of safe more (perhaps ?) pretty badly as it wouldn't accept any ignition advance at all - whatever we tried.

Good news is; Once sorted and then re-mapped i should be looking at 25-30bhp from where i currently am 🙂 Plus a whole lot of smoother fuelling  / punchier driving i hope.

Thanks again.

My money is on the MAF sensor. I have never heard of a knock sensor going bad personally.

I have had a dodgy MAF sensor in the past and yes the car was holding back.

I hope it is the cheapest result for you. Spent enough already 😀

You’re not alone in you’re thinking.  Lambda sensor was another suggestion. Still - live fault finding will tell. We hope.

And just so happens I have a Brand new MAF sensor in-hand and ready to fit tomorrow anyway......

***And I had big issues with a dodgy knock sensor on a previous car being re-mapped. Caused us all sorts of issues you wouldn’t believe.

Anyway. If everything goes well we’re back on the rollers at 4.45pm tomorrow. I’ll get a video and post it up.

Cheers for your thoughts on knock sensor torque too. My man is no mug and I’m sure would have it all in hand. Just me being my normal ultra anal self.

Thanks again.

You may know this already Syer, but just in case, if you need to remove the MAF sensor you will need one of these, as I discovered to my cost quite recently:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Silverhill-Tools-Atk57-5-Point-Star-Torx-Bit-Set-10-Bits/24009499344

Quite why Porsche decided to fit them with a security bolt that's as rare as hens teeth I do not know!!

Thanks Ben ! I did know that. Google how-to video's are my very bestest friend 🙂

So an eventful day in Porsche-World. Car was live fault tested with my mechanic of nearly 30 years. And he's Porsche owner and fan may i add. And showed absolutely nothing, nada, zip. No fault codes. No warning (Or symptoms) of anything wrong or even close too. He said if it was his car - he'd have no concerns at all........

So we put on the new Bosch MAF sensor and 2 new Bosch knock sensors 'regardless' as they were in-hand and paid for:

nMwN3fj.jpg

Managed to get away from work on the dot of 4pm; and headed back to the mappers and strapped it down.....

IvS3t4l.jpg

Yet again car showed 231bhp and 250nm of torque: (So like 6% and 10% down respectively).

Mapper then said he's now absolutely sure car is 'shutting down' for some reason and this car and these (Basic and old ?) rollers just weren't working together. May have called it map-lock or Dyno lock ???? Anyway: we then pulled the PSM and anti-lock brake fuses - to see if car was detecting front wheels were not rotating and limiting power for that reason. Same damned result. At this point i was slight; depressed - and time and money was being pee'd into the wind for seemingly no good reason.

So - for a trial he said he'd upload a map he'd previously used very successfully on a customers stock 2.7 base onto my car; and that i could take it away; have "on trial" for a few weeks FOC and see what i thought.

So off i toddle, found an empty stretch of private driveway - and imo the car is somewhat transformed !!! Much more eager low down, flat spot around mid 3k has all but gone and up-top it feels like its much-much stronger. And as much and as important as anything - the fuelling is spot on, it idles great, runs well and throttle pedal generally feels more responsive.

What the heck i / we or you make of that little lot i've no idea ! But its definitely made a pretty big difference that's easily noticeable. Unfortunately his dyno appears to hate this car and i can't actually see the number for where i'm at now.

Whatever. I've just 'celebrated' by buying a Sprint-booster 😎

See you all soon guys. Off to Vegas tomorrow (And picking up some Porsche parts, visiting the Carrera Cafe and having a snout around the Museum at Gaudin Porsche while i'm there,). Then flying onto New York on the 4th Dec for 6 days: and in time to see the Rockefeller Christmas tree lights get switched on. Glad to see the back of work for a bit and never has a holiday been more needed from that.

Cheers.

What you said about the old rollers makes no sense to me at all. However I have nothing to add otherwise other than to congratulate you on the end result 👍

Me and SWMBO did Vegas and NY 🗽 on the way back.

Depending on what you are expecting you should have a blast. We stayed at the MGM but said if we go back then we would stay at the Aria, stunning hotel 😁

NY was a s**t hole, but most people I know love the place.

Enjoy 👍

Absolutely i hear you on the rollers - and any sane car-person would rightly be of the same opinion. The whole thing was a little back-street in some respects if i'm honest. And not quite as their website and my phone calls to them portrayed. However: all i can tell you and write here - is exactly what happened. And how sprightly the car now feels now compared ! Map is from a car that came out at 262bhp - done by same mapper on his previous rollers at his old location. I didn't actually ask the torque. But again - i can't tell you what mine is at present anyway 🤔 I will now be getting the car, fuelling etc checked when i get back at a Porsche specialist to be double-sure its all good. Unfortunately that required booking way ahead which i was too impatient for this time around.....😑

We absolutely love NYC. Its our 4th trip. We've actually done Xmas before; but haven't actually been there for lights switch on. However; first time in Vegas. Got lots planned and itinerary is like a military operation. **Apparently its best to do the max-bet and keep hitting the button on the slots: until you either lose the shirt off your back or the machine lights up like a Christmas tree i've heard.........🤣

That looks like a cool place to spend an hour or so.

If I told my Mrs that while we are in Vegas on holiday we will go to the Porsche dealership she would piss herself laughing and tell me to F*** off 😁 you are very lucky 👍

Was really good buddy. And as Carrera Cafe had a nice breakfast menu it was a no-brainer.

Not sure on ‘lucky. Still to find out what it will really cost me 🤣

My recent trip to the States afforded me a couple of pre-ordered genuine Porsche parts at some rock-bottom prices. A small piece of plastic trim that was marked and narked me.... (That i've already fitted - so no picture) at the bargain price of $40 compared to £80+ here in Blighty. And something that's been grinding me for a while: The 'blocked' washer jets [That appear to supposed to be a spray type affair - and so not adjustable or easily cleanable] for the bargain price of $45 for the pair....when they are something like £72 + postage for the pair from 911 design.........

tAXbnw9.jpg

I also decided to 'invest' in one of these all-encompassing OBD2 'Dongles' that will supposedly log performance, measure bhp and torque, measure fuel consumption, data log, fault find etc etc.

This one is a mini version in size - so should hide up well in a 987. Is IOS compatible: the latest Bluetooth 4 version and i've bought a paid for app for my phone and two Dongles so that i can use and monitor the Cayman and my daily without any faffing around. You have to enter in the cars model, weight, bhp, wheel size, engine size, weight, gearing, fuel capacity etc etc into the app - so should be reasonably accurate hopefully !

UAUcIct.jpg

And although it was here upon my arrival back from holidays yesterday - i didn't get the chance to fit / try my new Sprint-Booster V3 yesterday @Ben. I have just taken a quick snap with the Cayman key in the picture for comparison purposes to show it's size if it helps anyone in any way.....

My intention is to fit it very discreetly and completely hidden, set it up as i want for road use [I don't want to utilise the Valet mode, quite clearly the off mode is pointless - and the race mode is supposed to be very abrupt around town etc] in one of the 'Sport' settings - then remove the adjustability feature by way of removing the controller and leave it there as such. My father has had his fitted in an AMG Merc for a month or more now - and for reference says he has tried every setting / scenario / situation known to man - and could also happily do the same as he sits in "Sport mode 5" for the entire time. And he absolutely LOVES his....as do 99% of owners that have bought one from numerous reviews i've read online.

No one - let alone the manufacturers - claim more power from these devices i don't think. But there can be no doubt that if you can save some of the delay in time it takes for us to depress the throttle pedal and the butterfly to fully open - then it will allow you to utilise the cars potential faster. And that time-saving comes straight off whatever acceleration you're looking to achieve. That's fact as far as i can see. And something i'm looking forward to being able to make practical use of.......

A weekend in the garage is always a good one.......

Fitted my new windscreen washer jets. Easily accessible and not as bad as i imagined ref access once the battery cover panel is removed:

rT8at3O.jpg

Got my OBD2-port dongle plumbed in and hooked up to my phone. Brilliant thing for real time monitoring, fault finding, fault codes etc etc "Geek heaven" (Not that i am really !)

Oh4Lk7e.jpg

Then fitted my SprintBooster. Standard stuff and the Cayman put up a bit of a fight initially - but i won in the end. Tie-wrapped the unit to the back of the throttle pedal and it may not look like it - but it is well out of the way. The short cable it comes with doesn't give many choices to be fair. Had a good drive / play with the car in all settings and came to a happy all-around setting; Removed the controller and put it back in the box 🙂  ****Be interested to see what you find / think is a good setting for you - for daily driving @Ben ****

sUwZahK.jpg

Then had a lovely early morning drive on Sunday Morning; followed by a mega clean-up inside and out: and then got it fully dried, detailed and away again under-cover in the garage. Have to see what happens with the weather, salty roads etc - and if that's 'it' for this year......

tA33Ipk.jpg

And on a quiet Sunday evening i found myself on ebay again. These long, dark nights have a lot to answer for 🙄 Came across a supposedly fab quality, very heavy-duty seat cover with the Porsche logo on designed for larger seats (Current one i have for potentially mucky-moments isn't a fantastic fit and a little short on the base ideally). Should be here shortly.....

Thanks for checking in 🙂

Looking good. Does the dongle give Oil Temp?

Told you yours wouldn't be 2-3 weeks or whatever you said !!

No big secrets really Ben. Firstly leave car for 10 mins since you last started it.

I then completely unbolted my throttle pedal (One single large phillips set-screw). Not sure you'd even be able to get to the wiring connector otherwise. And it pulls upward to remove it from the car. Connector type for the wiring - and hence process for removing - appears to vary. And there are lots of video's on youtube so you don't force / snap the surely brittle plastic 'plug' before you know how it releases.

Then simply pull the clip / harness from the back of the pedal (There isn't much spare wiring - so you'll be scraping around at funny angles in your footwell with a bad back doing all this - especially with your new 'lows' lol 🙂 ), fit the newly supplied part inline between the wiring of the car and the pedal (Will only fit one way), plug in the controller and you're essentially 'done'.

You will need a longer / stronger tie-wrap(s) than supplied to somehow securely lash the inline Sprint-Booster unit to the rear of the pedal / mounting somehow.

Then test and enjoy ! Good luck......

I can't see it in the parameters to be fair. But you can't get a full 'operation' of the device / app unless it's hooked up to the car and connected - as opposed to sitting here in my front room. I will double check for you next time i start the car however....

But: Firstly you have to enter in your car, year, model etc in order to set it up on the app. Even as far as fuel capacity, injector flow-rate etc !  have the paid-for version of the app i use; and this means i can have multiple cars on file and flit between them.

When i switch to the Porsche - i can (For example) see short term fuel trim - BANK 1....and long term fuel trim bank 2. I can't see this on my other (4 cylinder) cars. So the app / OBD2 dongle / settings clearly knows there is and  can read and reference sensors on two banks of cylinders.

My point being - it would seem to me that the dongle can only read what sensors exist. And i'm guessing in terms of oil temp - that Porsche have nothing in place for that ??? Would be interesting for you to see if any other apps / dongles can read oil temp on a 987......

I've been trying to find something that easily reads oil temp for some time, so anytime someone gets a reader I ask. Our cars do have an oil temp sensor, but it seems it can't be read by OBD2. The Durametric Pro I have will read actual oil temp, but that requires a full laptop hookup and isn't practical whilst driving. Of course I could retro fit my own sensor, but I'd prefer a plug and play solution.

Prudent to keep on eye on oil temp on yours especially. And i knew where you were coming from....

"Strange" there is a sensor but it can't seemingly easily be hooked into and requires much more complex software. You'll crack the nut i'm sure....not off the back of this dongle though unfortunately !!

***Just looked and it can be read on my cheap daily, where a new engine could be procured for the price of a decent sandwich i suspect. Oh the irony...... 🙂
