Christmas Eve, Kids finally in bed (Youngest is 17 😁 ) so i thought i'd pen a few updates....

 

So; the whole issue (With car or Dyno we knew not...) with not actually being able to get a Dyno-printout / cast iron proof of any supposed improvements from the flashed file on my recent re-mapping was playing on me. TBH i was slightly deflated / underwhelmed with the whole 'experience' after my Dad being the initial guinea-pig and getting great results from the very same mapper on the very same rollers ! So i decided to try my luck elsewhere - with a full-on custom map.

 

**A base 2.7L is supposed to be 245bhp stock. And 201 lb-ft torque. And mine was actually a high of 232 bhp and very low 190-something lb-ft of torque as it stood from the factory [***Which in retrospect now looks to be very-very healthy initially !].

 

Anyway......"We" have now improved those to figures literally a hair over supposed stock on both counts [Car was slotted in late on Friday and collected after hours: so all the gory details, certificate of the mapping; and dyno run print-outs are being emailed to me - which will now be in the New Year i suspect].

 

On paper these figures may not look great. But after doing quite some reading on the subject - it seems to me these cars [2.7 and 2.9L base models: for best comparison] often seem to have notoriously low outputs compared to Porsche's lofty claims. And any extra from there has to worked hard for. So for these generic mappers who flash a file on; to put claims out there of 260bhp+ [For the 2.7L like mine] seems a 'nonsense' to me sitting here now - after due diligent apre-research. But as always; these figures can be played with as the mapper see's best fit ! And one Dyno can be off from another. So all they are truly good for is gaining a baseline figure, to then compare further modifications or work with - on the same Dyno.

And this 2.9L  base were of particular interest [None being the larger engined 'S' engines; and all 3 being way below stock figures......and no-one showing any 'concern' with that ! ]:

So all in all i'm now 110% happy in my head and really chuffed with the car. Mapper gave it a 100% clean-bill of Health. It feels slightly more sprightly than it did, and overall does feel from my butt-of-the-seat Dynamometer like it has another couple of hundred CC's tucked away under there. And as we all know "....You can't beat cubes" ! But this car and the whole re-map debacle has never been about straight line speed or BHP numbers. And the driveability gains i would say; are more than equal to the small numerical increases. It will be interesting to see how much torque was gained midrange etc and below peak figures. Because that's real-World on the road.

 

 

So the obvious thing to do after getting it running tip-top was........

 

SORN it off-road 🤣 TBH i've never run a toy this late into the year. But we've had a great run since i purchased it late July, a few fab drives - and if i'm honest the sight of the gritters out and about gives me the shakes. I'm thinking i'll get it back out 1st April:

I then spoke to my detailer Monday - after him doing some amazing rejuvination work on a friends leather seats very recently - and he's going to come over to my house in the Holidays; and work his magic on mine too.

 

And my painter is also primed (No pun intended 🙄) to re-finish my centre-console and sill scuff plates in the New Year [***I need to research console / trim plate paint-codes]. Then i really will have ticked the boxes of all my gripes. I think 😎

 

Ohhhh......And I bought my Father a pair of these door-catch cover plates for his AMG Merc for Christmas. So got myself a set too. Can't decide if they are really cheesy and going to go on or not yet:

I've always been a bit sceptical about remapping a non turbocharged car. 

Your experience does validate this somewhat. 

However that hasn't stopped me looking AT DMS and what they can do for my car. 

From memory they claim 255bhp and a similar torque hike. They seem like realistic figures to me, although the cynic in me wonders if it is possible then why did they not do it from the factory? 

As you alude to is is all about the butt dyno 😁

It a bit like the sport button on my CRZ daily chugger 🤔 it doesn't make the car faster but due to the razor sharp throttle response it feels like it. 

 

My Cayman has been sorn'd since end Oct 😭 I do miss it. 

Me thinks the first dry salt free day will see it getting taxed 😂😂

Entirely my own fault for firstly being impatient; and secondly choosing the easy, local option ref: 'mapping'.

 

I've had 2 cars (Both N/A) custom-mapped previously and never have i had a 'generic' flash-map. Both the other cars [Clio RS-200 and Civic Type R] responded really well. Clio especially. Difference - relatively - was night and day on the road. This on 2 notoriously fairly highly tuned 2 litre lumps of bang on 100bhp/litre. Where you could possibly argue gains might be very hard to achieve.

 

I'm with you on the ease / large gains on a Turbo car though. And that probably didn't help me either ! I was pretty unmoved about the whole remap thing - and wasn't bothered either way. Until my old man announced he was going in to get his AMG 400 Merc done at this local place. He went in with 333bhp and 492nm of torque at short notice. Came out with 400bhp and just over 604nm of torque. AND driveability to die for.  I well knew his and my gains wouldn't in any way be comparible. But it all seemed so damned easy......

 

**Copy of his graph is below if you're at all interested. The torque - and how it climbs so quickly from nowhere - is now nuts. Like literally anywhere over 1500rpm on the road and any gear will do. Just plant the loud-pedal and off she goes:

But that aside; what i would say is there are very noticeable gains to be had from the baby Cayman imo. And why not like that from the factory you ask ? For emissions, for fuel consumption, for noise, for a car that will be run on low quality fuel and never serviced to keep the distance between it and the "S" model even (?). They are just so set-up for safety, longevity and having a moron as an owner for want of a better term. If you are prepared to keep it tip-top, able to keep the servicing up to date, take the hit on using premium fuel and basically put a little more into it - you can definitely eat into the extremely safe standard parameters.

 

So i think just take any potential (high ?) claimed figures with a pinch of salt; do your research and know your Tuner. All the usual stuff the red mist and being an impatient git passed me by initially this time. After having two previous custom maps done from the relevant 'specialists' in their field - i should have known there are no short-cuts.

 

Still; here's your chance to learn from my mistakes 😎

So; the baby base Cayman may be SORNED while the worst of the UK weather passes under our belts for a couple of months. But that doesn't mean we sit still and vegetate 🤪

And today i've booked the car in (1st March 🙄 ) for one last tiny bit of paintwork that i hadn't noticed. It's actually a small but 'odd' looking piece of lacquer right near the drivers side lower window seal. Whether 'something nasty' has sat there in the past i've no idea (?) And re: "The exterior" - i'm also going to get the intake grilles painted / lacquered in Satin Black.

 

Aaaaaand my painter is also primed.....no pun intended.....to get the centre console and the plastic drivers and passenger side sill protectors re-finished at the same time: At £240 replacement cost just for the drivers side sill protector (And it would still be in the crappo Gen1 soft-touch finish) and which could look the same again in short-order - it's a no-brainer to try something else finish-wise:

Walked in from work tonight to an insurance renewal notice. I didn't have a true figure as yet: as i swapped cars almost exactly half-way through my last policy. So was pleased (But perhaps not surprised at heading toward 50) - to find these below as the cheapest 3 quotes on Comparethemarket:

So in the end after playing about with the options to suit: Fully comp, other cars use, driving abroad, PNCB, windscreen / stereo / valuables cover etc etc on a 4000 miles a year policy for bang on £200.  Laughable....😇

 

 

And now....looking forward slightly....that i'm happy the car is 110% mechanically and cosmetically; and that all my niggles will be a thing of the past; i can't stop looking at exhausts. Carnewal, TopGear, Milltek ? Hit me with some thoughts for something that will sound like a 6-pot Porsche, not be 1/5th of the cars purchase price and also won't alert every other driver on the road to the fact i'm coming......*** [If only the concept / sound of the Carnewal could be coupled up with Stainless steel construction - it would be a true 'no contest' decision imo]

I'm no expert Syer, but I love my Carnewal GT exhaust - a year later it still puts a smile on my face when I start her up!

I have a Tubi on mine and I have never heard another cayman like it.  People always make a point of coming over to comment on how good it sounds when on drive days etc

That's a cracking insurance price. I can't get mine under £300....the speeding tickets might have something to do with it....

 

And another for Carnewal GT.....with your old system traded in it's near as dammit £500 + installation, and she will "yowl" nicely. Upgrade the air filter and desnork (with some sort of intake protection) if you're inspired to fiddle around in the hunt for more induction noise (which based on everything I've seen from your posts, you probably will....😉)

Oh the sound is gorgeous Ben. No one could ever level anything else at it imo. I've driven a friends CaymanS with a GT system a couple of times and its gorgeous from tickover to top of the rev-counter. Just feels a little 'wrong' not taking the opportunity to go with a stainless system somehow......

Unreal isn't it. I feel a little embarrassed to admit it really. It's obvious you have to be old, solid and dependable to get that sort of insurance price. Whilst i still imagine myself to be young, virile and spontaneous. Do you reckon i can ring and complain and get a slight increase ? If only to appear at least semi-fashionable on internet forums ? 🤣

 

You Sir are a fine judge of character. I'm also having intake grilles painted / lacquered Satin Black when the car eventually goes in. And had planned on de-snorking at the same time whilst 'in there". **Thanks for the heads-up. Of course - i need to investigate meshes and best type to use / easiest and tidiest way to install etc.

 

Are you sporting a Carnewal yourself Craig ??

 

 

Anyone know about the standard exhausts composition ? Are they an aluminized mild steel construction ? Does Gert "merely" work his magic on the insides - or does the outside get some sort of refresh too ?

Sounds like you have some nice upgrades in the pipeline. I look forward to seeing them installed.

 

A note on the side intakes - try and remove them on a warm ish day and go steady, they are very easy to break. The best methods I found for removing them is to wrap duct tape around the locations where the tabs are and form a pull strap (the longer the better). This seems to distribute the force better and avoided breakages.

 

As for the de-snork - I didn't bother with any sort of mesh. The standard item doesn't have one and merely forces the air to be collected from below. I removed mine about 15K ago when I installed the performance filter and have found nothing but a small feather in the air intake box. The first time I changed the filter there were two leaves in there.

 

As for the GT exhaust; Gert doesn't do anything with the outside, his system is designed so that the dealerships can't tell it's been modified.

I’m using mine as daily (ish) and told that if in rain that desnorking isn’t a good idea? 
 

Ive ordered some side intake grills that clip into place from front and sides 🙂

Happy New Year and thanks very very much for all that info and help Dougle. All noted accordingly ! De-snorking right now seems pointless when grilles are to be painted later anyway, car is SORNED and like you say - the risk of snapping some 12+ year old brittle plastic clips in this cold is high. But likely right now i may add an exhaust, whack an air filter in, de-snork and get the map tweaked to suit at the same time. May free it up a little. And if don't it should sound a little more Porsche-like..... 

 

Yes Sprint-booster in without issue and its good thank-you. Had a bit of use in the run upto Christmas and i like it. I settled on Race 1 setting, removed the controller and that's how it sits. You don't do much car modding for £180'ish....and this is very obvious and noticeably "improved" in my eyes....

 

 

What's your plans for this year ? Lots of proper use and abuse i'm sure ! Anything on the horizon for the car itself ?

Are these like the fine mesh backed grills that cover the whole aperture effectively ?  

 

Mines not a daily - infact will be fine summer Sunday use only. So not too much concern over the wet stuff i hope ! And i will just be in for some sort of home-made smaller cover directly over the inlet itself i think - if i can manage it professionally enough. Nothing to do with cost etc (***They are cheap enough aren't they having just looked) - i just prefer the visuals of the standard grilles and not hugely keen on that "Zunsport fine mesh" look.

 

***Likely will look a lot better / blend in more on yours being Black than mine to be fair....

 

Get some pics up when you're done, so after you being guinea-pig i can decide further 🤣

I've driven mine through every sort of wet weather and not had any problems. Nor have I seen any evidence of the filter housing getting wet inside. From what I can see the only thing the snork protects against is water sprayed directly into intake, so I just go easy around that part with the pressure washer. Nothing to worry about IMHO.

Well, as most of us do I have a list of things I'd like to do.....whether they will get done is another matter! Top of the list is a visit to CoG for a pre season 4 wheel alignment and a torque check on all the vitals. I'd also like a LSD, but I have a lot going on this year so may keep that on the back burner. Other than that just some tweaks here and there - I'd like to paint the centre console around the gear shift white to lift the interior a bit. (I've been on the hunt for months)

 

As for trips etc I have two trips booked to the Nurburgring - One in April and one in October with Circuit Days. There will also be a driving trip to Scotland or Europe (not sure which yet). Other than that it'll be the usual spread of trackdays. If the weather is good on the 18th I'll probably do Bedford.

##Sounds like the "Desnork and to mesh or not to mesh?" question has been answered by esteemed peers, and yes, I am a Carnewal user / fan. If you have questions, contact Gert directly, he knows the club well and is great on Comm's (not sure if the COC has a discount with him). Happy mod'ing!

They are hidden behind the main plastic. I'm not a fan of the Zunsport ones either and at 4 times the cost too really.

Gert is working is magic on a Cayman R exhaust for me that I brought off Nick :) to then send to Precision Porsche to get it fitted within the next week or so :)

And onto my car: I'm still not 1000% sure on what exhaust to get (Or not as the case maybe if i'm not fully happy / convinced) - and i'm in no rush. But i'm 99% sure it won;t be a TopGear system. 3 emails sent in recent times to 3 separate TopGear employees / email addresses (One of whom i believe is a Director and is organising a 'Group buy' on a Facebook Group)......and not a single reply to my queries from any. Their lack of response speaks volumes and doesn't bode well imo, And the more i read - the more i'm unsure of over various "fitment issues" documented. The same ones i've received no comments on from TopGear !

 

The best sounding (sic) overall system i've found of all the video's i've watched and read about is a Remus. Quality appears to be fantastic from all i've read and i've heard no horror stories over alignment or fit. It is going to end up as £1500-£1600 on the car with new gaskets, clamps etc though. Is that madness on a 2007 base Cayman we ask......
