Royals work is absolutely fantastic. No slumming it in the cockpit for you any more !

Looks fantastic Tony. You pleased with how it all turned out ?

***Do they do an exchange service on ‘ours’ - so you were never without a wheel ?

Hi Syer,

Yes really pleased with it. the standard thin rimmed wheel is ridiculous in my opinion, bloody great spindly thing.

Having the thicker rim makes a massive difference, makes the wheel look and feel smaller and much more tactile.

I did it on a exchange/surcharge basis (refundable £150) so that I could simply remove and then refit straight away just in case I couldn't remember where things went.  In the end I needn't have bothered it is a piece of cake. Took me 20  minutes and I was taking it slowly !!

Been meaning to update this thread for a while now.  Truth is I am working 12 hour days (key worker) and when I was off I was too busy sitting in the sun with a beer :5_smiley:

The car was due a minor service this spring and I wanted it done before my yearly trip to the Nürburgring !!

I got the car booked in for the end of March with Cavendish Porsche of Long Eaton Notts. I also got them to price me for fitting a GT3 master cylinder.

I have always hated the brake pedal feel on my car,  in my opinion it is yet another piss poor design by Porsche (I know this is a common opinion).  One was sourced o line for a bargain price of £90 delivered :5_smiley:

The garage has the PIWIS computer so I was happy they could do the job correctly.

However being a tight sod I thought I would do it my self and save some money.  I mean what could possibly go wrong ?

I thought that as long as I kept the ABS unit full of fluid and did not allow it to empty I would be ok to simply reverse bleed form the Calipers and therefore push the fluid upwards and fill the master cylinder that way.

Everything was ready to start

IMG_20200307_100419.JPG.b43f40d11ba1ea55deafe0a72265e678.JPG

Old one being removed

IMG_20200305_195546.JPG.279949f342b02056fa8b2cffc99043cc.JPG

New one fitted

IMG_20200307_090206.JPG.a4dd2169c067ee11d0863c69f4affc14.JPG

All bled through and ready to test

IMG_20200307_105306.JPG.1060ed3a8becb0f2731d86f94eb605b4.JPG

So moment of truth arrived, pumped the pedal and got it rock hard to test the servo seal, all was ok..

Started the engine and tentatively pressed the brake pedal ready to relish in the rock hard pedal.  What did I get ?  yep you've guessed it the pedal went straight to the floor :sAng_banghead:

I removed the master cylinder, checked everything and then refitted it a bled the bloody system again. Did I get a firm pedal ?  did I hell :sAng_banghead::sAng_banghead::sAng_banghead:

I rang the specialist and explained that I am a muppet and could they help me, "of course" they said. I then had to tow the car there (about 15 miles) which was unpleasant.

I was due to collect the car after having the service done, bleed the brake system properly and change the coolant and the 2 front lower hoses (the upper ones had already been done by the supplying dealer)

Of course what happened ? the lockdown that's what :(

I had images of my poor car being stranded at the garage unable to collect her.

I am pleased to say they they opened the day after simply to finish my car and one other before they closed.

10/10 to Cavendish Porsche for good customer service

I went to collect it like an excited schoolboy. Paid the £800 bill and went on my merry way.

This was the first time I could drive it since I SORN'D it last November.

The transformation was incredible, the pedal is much much firmer with very little pedal travel before the brakes bite, just what I wanted

This is how the car should have been made in my opinion,  the extra confidence it gives is enormous.

Yes the pedal requires a bit more effort but it is still very easy to modulate and it gives good feel.

Thank you for reading.

Cheers.....Tony..

LMAO at going from a have-a-go "cheapskate" to an £800 bill 😆

Pedal feel with GT3 m/cylinder upgrade sounds fab. I think i'll likely do this at some point too. Will fit in with some other OEM+ changes i've made. So keep me updated with how you feel (No pun intended) as the weeks pass if you'd be so kind. You sound like you've made your mind up you're extremely pleased with it already mind.......

All the rest of the 'servicing' threw up no nasty surprises i take it ?

12 hour shifts sound tough Tony. I'm not contracted to do those; but in the light of being key workers in Engineering [We support a Port that's a major transport hub for food, medicine and fuel that the government have said must stay running] with 30% of Staff off - i did manage to rack up 76 hours last week over the 7 days.

Stay safe and well; and keep the updates coming 🙂

Hi Syer, sorry for the late response, as you are well aware doing shifts as a key worker is very time consuming 😁

Service was good in that there wasn't any bad news forthcoming apart from the hoses but I was expecting that TBH.

Will give a better Update on the MC as time goes by when I have had a chance to use it more 👍

Update number five.

There is a lot of talk about exactly where to fit the CTEK charger lead. I used to have it under the battery cover but soon got pissed off removing and refitting the cover.

the resolution was simple.

Hard wire the fly lead to the battery, and then simply run it through the rubber grommet (you will need to make a tiny hole) and then poke it through the little window by the side of the master cylinder like so...

IMG_20191109_115913.JPG.c79a352a2ef533a6b2c2fa88e179b11d.JPG

No more messing about simply pop the bonnet and connect...

Cheers.....Tony..

Thanks for sharing...….. can I assume then that when the car is on charge that the bonnet is left open and the car not locked?  I am looking for the best solution to be able to leave the car on charge with all doors / trunks closed and the car locked.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Hi mate. You are correct when it is on charge I leave the bonnet on the latch and the car unlocked, the car is in a very secure garage so I don't lock the car.

If you wanted to lock yours the lead can be fitted with plenty of loose length so you simply pull it out, connect it up then close the bonnet and lock 😁

Minor update time.

I have always hated the look of the rusty bolts on the exhaust hanging bracket.

I removed it from the car and then remembered to take some pics !

IMG_20200427_113249.JPG.b43d98583a0d1e6831286a2f3aeb50b3.JPG

IMG_20200427_115304.JPG.a986d876bba564297b76de572673111b.JPGIMG_20200427_115310.JPG.6eb5d45139039236c856f133b0b54ef6.JPG

Stripped it all down gave it a really good clean with WD40 and some scotchbrite, it brought the stainless steel up a treat.

Built it all back up again with new stainless bolts.

IMG_20200501_165553.JPG.85a36a739636158c8e8dade03214c582.JPG

Then refitted it to the car..

IMG_20200501_172230.JPG.ae9a320ab09d8c958ff7ea0b675cd1fc.JPG

Of course it now makes my exhaust system look s**t :(

I do not want a stainless one so next winter I might remove it completely to clean and repaint.

As I say just a small update but does make a massive difference to the appearance underneath the car and from a rear view :)

My OCD finally got the better of me.

I recently fitted a new bonnet badge and was never happy with how straight it was, always seemed a little bit wonky to me.

So I rigged up this...

IMG_20200513_142520.JPG.868a0b69fa974c94362bbb2971786424.JPG

Then lined it up through the centre of the bonnet with the little button thing on top of the dash...

IMG_20200513_142631.JPG.aa2315ce7e3b1131e1f1f726de060504.JPG

Then tweaked the badge till it was spot on..

IMG_20200513_142545.JPG.3db91b452d13c1a8297de13921724d18.JPG

I can now breath a sigh of relief as it looks plum bob dead on :)

I then went for a shake down drive (first proper drive of 2020) to visit my favourite park about 1 hour away.  :wind14:I went on my own in order to maintain social distancing...

My god I enjoyed that, forgot just how good these cars are and how they simply flow along the road and come to life above about 50-60 mph, below that I always think they feel 'heavy'

I will admit though I am starting to crave more power. yes the 2.7 has enough power but I'm sorry I just want a bit more. I am still considering a DMS remap which hopefully should give me what I am looking for.

just need to work out how to sneak it past SWMBO...

Take care all...Tony.

FABULOUS, pointless (To some), OTT, attention to detail with the badge Tony - love it !! Are you a Virgo too ? 😆

Had a 40 mile B-road smooch in mine yesterday. Agree slightly heavy at low speed; but come alive when rolling a bit more. And even though it's an old, relatively slow, base model - it still laughs at you in the twisties when you think you gone into a corner 'fairly briskly' and it doesn't twitch, complain or grumble coming out the other side. Now the John Cooper Works Mini i did the return journey in; is a tool for the job - from a different mold. First ever "new" Mini i've ever driven. That is one very fun (Light feeling) car.....

*You'll deffo notice a REMAP on these. Kind of feels like the best service / engine refresh you've ever had. Just a little more pep and eagerness IMO.....

Haha, no I'm actually a Libra!

Not sure what that says about me 😁

Bizzarely I'm only OCD in certain areas, mainly mechanical and things that don't look right.

I always keep it really clean but not to the "detailer" level. My car cleaning kit is rather pathetic.

Got it booked in for a full geo and Mot 1st June...

I have a feeling the remap will have to wait, the Mrs would not be too impressed, supposed to be saving for our planned early retirement 😁😁

@Tozerman - Now..........retirement is the ultimate mod you can make in your life ! I'm not hugely close; but something i'm planning for a lot more seriously these days. Best of luck realising your hopes on that.

Who's doing the Geo and on what machinery ? Going for a check-up and factory settings, trying the "R" settings or......?

I'm late 50s and hoping to go semi retired at 60 😁 that is as long as I stop spending on the Porsche that is 🤣

Taking it to Cavendish Porsche in Long Eaton Nottingham.

They have full Hunter gear. Not sure about settings yet I will have a chat with them and see how I get on,  I would like slightly more aggressive settings than standard if possible 😁

Based on my experience of 986/987s, I would be tempted to max out the front camber so that it is even side to side (you'll probably only get 0.7-0.8 on stock suspension), set the rear at about 1.3 - 1.5 (1 degree 20-30 minutes), run neutral toe up front and then about 5 minutes of toe in per wheel at the rear (basically, stock at the rear and more aggresive at the front). That'll dial out some of the understeer and give you a nice quick turn in. The Porsche specs allow neutral toe at the rear but this feels a little brave to me (and is surprising given how conservative the rest of the settings are)

I have mine set a little more aggresively than the above at the front (PM me if you would like details) and the handling feels fantastic. The turn in is fast and you can then use the throttle to bring the rear around (more in terms of rear end mobility than snappy/twitchy oversteer). When I first had it done it felt like driving a totally different car. The trouble you may have is finding a garage who will set it to your specs rather than the manufacturers spec

Edited To Add: If they won't let you set the camber out of spec, just specifying neutral toe up front (within spec) will make the car turn much quicker. It may be a bit less stable in a straight line (wandering more) but to be honest, I have not noticed anything untoward on mine and I've done a few track days with it

Thanks for the advice Lenny, much appreciated. I have been thinking similar settings to yours TBH i.e. max front camber and 1.5 degrees rear, your toe suggestions have given me food for thought thank you.

I highly recommend Centre Gravity.

Very experienced in getting the best out of our cars.

I have used Chris & Pete at CG many times in the past with my previous S2000, always got the car absolutely pin sharp.

Alas the budget wont quite run to a visit there this spring due to my large service bill. My indy charges £150 whereas last time I went to CG it was £360 !! I know you get what you pay for but for the time being my indy will be just right.

I will take it to CG though at some point in the future..
