Trickle
Love a 996 with the GT3 kit, looks so smart. Haven't they aged well from a design point of view. Keep the updates coming!
Founder Beanoir™ Posted July 25, 2020 Author Founder Share Posted July 25, 2020 Well, rain stopped play a bit today, because I don't have the luxury of a garage these days. This is one of two new track rod ends... And my piece of aluminium arrived, ready to be turned into something more interesting...

I’ve just sent it away with my buddy tonight, he’s going to turn it into something useful based on my pathetic drawings...we’ll see how that goes!
Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted July 26, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted July 26, 2020 I had grand plans of making up some mesh grills for my front bumper today. The mesh was awkward to cut without some decent tools and the compound curves involved just made matters worse. Still, the bumper was off and it allowed me to clean the rads, replace all the bumper fixings and screws for new parts and align the bumper correctly. It’s been bugging me since I got the car. After fitting the offside track rod end, the steering was cock-eyed so I adjusted the tracking back to a respectably driveable state. Once I’ve finished fitting the other front suspension components this week I’ll get it booked in for a proper geo. Anecdotally, I went out for a spin this afternoon and saw a field of sunflowers, I’m not generally into flowers as such but I’ve never seen this in the U.K. It always used to remind me of driving south through France when on holiday, you knew you were getting somewhere far away and hotter when you saw a field of sunflowers..
Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted July 27, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted July 27, 2020 Last of the parts arrived today. 4 coffin arms and front tuning forks. Also some genuine anti rattle pads, when I replaced the brakes I omitted to replace them and turns out I should have done!
Founder Beanoir™ Posted July 31, 2020 Author Founder Share Posted July 31, 2020 Well because I’m now gainfully employed again I’m finding less time to fettle with the car. So, suspension components are still sitting waiting to be fitted. I did start to think about exterior stuff, I would like to apply some stripes. Now I realise this kind of thing is not to everybody’s taste, but I’m experimenting with something of a retro type of look. It’s been done before, nothing new really - I just fancy it. Subtle grey on silver..?

Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted August 1, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted August 1, 2020 I don’t seem to ever remember having this particular issue with any of my previous P Cars, but the wind noise from the drivers door at motorway speeds was becoming annoying. I read that if the door window is not pushing hard enough against the door rubber then it can cause excessive wind noise. One way of easily testing this is to use the ‘paper test’ (not related to the ‘pencil test’ unfortunately 😉). Closing the door with a piece of paper between glass and rubber. If the paper is easily pulled out with no grab on it, then the window needs adjusting. There are a number of adjustment screws and bolts located in the underside of the door. Locating this particular one, loosening it, moving in the direction on the outside of the door (by about 7mm in my case) and tighten. Wind noise fixed 👍🏻 Just to be clear, this is a different ‘wind noise’ to that I have experienced when riding in @Windymiller’s car - (thought I’d get in first with that joke!! 🤣 1

Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted August 4, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted August 4, 2020 Well my knob extension is taking longer than expected, apparently that can happen with older models... But today, the old girl still got a treat (that’s not a knob joke) - front and rear coffin arms - front and rear tuning forks - front ARB bushes - front drop links - rear track control arms - drilled out broken brake disc retaining screws And a wheel alignment to finish it all off. It was a job I’d wanted to do myself, but I didn’t fancy getting half way through with the car in pieces and finding I had a stuck bolt without the means to remove it and then being completely buggered. I took the car in to AMS Porsche in Hertfordshire based on a few recommendations and I’m really glad I did. Angus and the team there have been absolutely fantastic. Genuine, honest and down to earth guys who I’d recommend based on my experience.
Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted August 8, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted August 8, 2020 Busy day today. @NWDetailing kindly sorted out my slightly hazy headlights this morning, great job and now just a UV sealant to apply to keep them from yellowing again. I also had a 997 gear shifter to install, which requires the removal of the centre consoles. It was pretty grubby, so a good clean up to remove 20 years of other people’s dead skin (grim!). New 997 shifter fitted. It’s not a SSK but it’s about 20% shorter throw than a 996 shifter and a lot less slop in the mechanism. Decided to cover all the panels and console lid in Alcantara to match the gear lever gaitor and my headlining. Really tricky and the glue gets everywhere!! But, I’m pleased with the look.
Windymiller
All looks brilliant Nick. I didn’t realise a 997 shifter would fit a 996 🤔 might a 987 (non SSK) fit a 986 then too? Edited August 8, 2020 by Windymiller

Yes, they’re all the same, all 986/996/987/997 are the same, the 9x7 just have a better design of the bushes and mechanism. The cradle it all fits in is exactly the same. Budflicker
I just wish I had your skills and paitence to do those jobs, really impressed. I do love a 911, I sold my 996 C4S just before the lock-down as it really wasn't getting used and I figured money in the bank was better than more metal sat on the drive rotting while there is a global pandemic about to kick off. Glad I did, but it does feel strange to not have a 911, first time in 12 years without one. I'm sure at some point another one will arrive, Joanne wants a barn conversion first though so by the time i can afford another one i will be the classic old man in a Porsche 911. They are fantastic things though mate, I'm sure you are going to really enjoy it. This might be worth a watch for you, strangely the link appeared at the top, but you get the jist...
