Cayman R Chat

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, Hamperman here from piston heads.  Thought I’d join in more on this forum too.

I rang up about the new ruby red car today,  sounds lovely but no air con either which isn’t a deal breaker for some.  I thought the colour was arena red as isn’t ruby more of a pink purple colour that is used on the 964rs?  It’s not far from me, only about 20 miles away.

Hi Hamperman

Are you up for the 10 year anniversary Cayman R meet up next Spring?

Good to see you in here, i think you might be confusing Ruby with Rubystone which was the pinkish 964 RS colour amongst other classic pork.

Hi, yes indeed I was getting mixed up with rubystone.  Not sure I’m that keen then on the ruby red, looks a bit burgundy for me but I’m sure someone will snap it up.

A 10 year anniversary meet up sounds great, will depend a little on where and when as I’m in Yorkshire so not too far south please!

oh so close you should definitely check it out, if you are in the market for one. No air con would drive me crazy, but yes not a dealbreaker for many. When I first saw the car I was like wow, but now on reflection, red wise, I prefer the Guards Red. Something about that Ruby isn’t working for me. Could be the decal colours/accents as Budflicker mentions. Now a CR in Rubystone I think would look very special

Yes agree, guards looks way nicer and a big premium for the low mileage.  Mine is a PDK so was keen to try a manual but the cost to change I don’t think will work and I think I’d miss air con if I’m honest. Plus condition of mine is excellent as it’s had PPF from new and lived in a heated garage for the time I’ve had it.

Worth a drive though in it - though I bet they are counting the miles on it now! bonkers of late isnt it, seems so much interest for a manual R. I am quite new to the party, only posting on forums about a month leading up to my collection of my R a few weeks ago....yet I was monitoring discussions a few years ago (when I started my search) and I don't recall there being so much heat for a manual R. I guess its the influence of the prices now. I did say on PH that I'd have been prepared to pay over the odds, but even if that Ruby one was in black, regardless of the low milage, 50K is pushing it a bit I feel. Its either going to get snapped up from a sleeper lying in wait all this time, or stick around for years and years I reckon, one of the two.

I bought my R 4 years ago now and I specifically wanted a PDK.  I’ve had a knee replacement at an early age and plan to keep the R a long time so decided an auto will suit me longer.  When using the paddles in my PDK it feels fairly manual but perhaps not as much as the purists.  The spec is good with buckets, spyders, pse, sports chrono, air con amongst others.  I couldn’t justify the cost to change just for the gearbox when deep down I know PDK suits me better.

Naive new owner question. I could call a specialist garage. After two weeks of ownership i love the R, just that the ride is a bit hard on London streets. Out of the city, perfect. Is there an easy way for the ride to be softened a bit, or is it a whole 'to-do' ?

Not possible without changing the suspension which imho is one of it's great features. My advice is run it as is for a few more weeks and then see how you feel, I think you'll grow to like it ;)

Thank you Andy for your reply. AH I see. So even changes of the shocks wouldn't help? or is that one and the same as the suspension (I am naive I admit). Probably right, in time I'll learn to live with the way it rides.

If you change the shocks to something softer then in a way you should have just bought an S with PASM.

Admittedly the shocks in an R were not tuned and designed to e at their best on London's streets so don't be surprised that they are a bit harsh over speed bumps and potholes.

You just need a good drive out in the country on some decent B roads and you will really appreciate what the R is about.

Better still a Euro trip where the roads are on another level, then the R really is perfection.

I've toured in a 996 Turbo, a 996 C4S and a 997 GT3 and then last year toured the Alps and Pyrenees in the Cayman R and it was fantastic.

In fact for road driving and touring it was every bit as fun as the GT3 that I used to own.

If used for the purpose Porsche design them these are amazing machines.

A few snaps so you believe me.

Yep, I'm with you. As Andy says, I'll learn to enjoy..... its only been a few weeks of ownership and yep when I am out of the city it is mind-blowing.

Can take a little time in the seat to bond but once you get the CR you really appreciate what a great car it really is.

Not the best on the uk city pot hole speed bump roads but out on the open road and abroad awesome .

Mines a fun car i have an every day car so only occasionally hit towns in the R.

My VIN details that my R was built at Stuttgart Zuffenhausen. Am I right to believe that some were from the Finland plant, and having it built at Stuttgart HQ is an anorak bonus! :)

car seems good for the money was almost tempted to buy it for a daily

That one is still for sale, almost a year on. And earlier in the forum about 18 months ago is mention of the AutoStore one (with buckets). Both PDKs, which I respect is a necessity for some drivers. Some R's really stick around for ages huh. That is a seriously long time to sit in stock for.

Anyone on here with a Black Cayman R? Spotted one at Tesco in Mold N. Wales the other day. Looked like a cherished "N" reg plate but it passed before I could clock it properly. Don't see many around here !

Naive question, but why is an N reg plate cherished? Just curious as was thinking of getting a cheap'ish registration.
