Hunting for my first Porsche: A Cayman 987.2

coolant pipes and hoses at this age, I’d be surprised if your PPI doesn’t pick them up if they haven’t been done already.

and maybe some significant suspension refresh (ie shocks and therefore potentially multiple control arms and drop links etc if their seized when removed). That said, I do think the suspensions on these can be good for 100k+ miles, it really does depend how they’ve been treated in the preceding years and miles, which hopefully your PPI will pick up.

consider cosmetics like drivers seat bolster condition - a possible retrim would cost you, not prohibitively so, but worth having something to negotiate with/on.

none of the above would put me off, so long as their replacement cost was factored into the purchase price.

what would put me off more would be an unreceipted service history. Stamps in a book are one thing, I always want to see receipted proof of what has been done and I believe a caring owner will make the effort to keep them. I have a folder for my cayman with every receipt in it for every service and maintenance visit and every item bought for it (even down to plastic clips and screws for eg my DIY bumper removal and refit).

that kind of history shows the car has been cherished and cared for, and that makes the biggest difference as to the underlying condition of the car.

when do you get the PPI report / feedback?

Difficult to get that sort of folder of reciepts etc from a dealer these days, especially if they haven't been traded into the selling dealer. I had a chunky folder of receipts on my 2017 Golf 7.5R when i sold it to the dealer. Bet the new owner of the Golf didn't get it.

It's a shame that happpens, but they seem to hide behind GPDR, which is another farce, similar to having to agree to cookies on every damn website you go on!

I still don't understand why alot of buyers pay a big premium from dealers. You don't get the paperwork and they don't seem to realise that if a warranty is that important to them... I bet they can actually sort their own.  The best cars are often private but require some legwork

I bought mine from a dealer as they offered me a great price (I felt) on my Golf R, plus it had only done 20k miles.

As a dealer they were rubbish though.

If you need to part-ex makes more sense I guess.  I've never been in that position as offload my old cars privately.

I normally sell privately. Didn't want a load of randoms off the net weighing up my Golf R given the propensity of 'view now, steal later' stories.

I am thinking this more and more. I bought mine from a dealer, but knowing what I do now I think I would buy privately with a PPI next time. Would likely look for an example with high miles too. As this was my first Porsche I liked the idea of dealer prep being done, but I have just had to fork out £500 for new AC condersors which is something that definitely should have been done before I bought it!

....or still with a dealer, but with a with an independent PPI. Thats what I did. Best of both worlds - the ease of part exchange (944T against an R) and a second opinion.

Hi all decided to put my Cayman up for sale. It’s not getting used a lot so time to sell. Just spent £1700 on a service in April. The car has been a dream and never let me down.

Looks lovely in Guards! And very different to my Aqua Blue example.

Update: I am now an official Cayman owner!! Bought the 3.4 S today for £21,000.

I got the PPI results yest and, well, about £3k of work was listed, haha. Some was minor or wear to be expected to be fair but main things were:

- coolant pipes corroded, will need doing in next 12 months

- geometry slightly off

- brake pipes (x3) that had been repaired had cat just been joined. Will need fully redoing again at some point.

- tyres about 4/5mm tread and all cracked, about 3,000 miles left in them. Will need replacing in c. 6 months for me I think

- all rims need a refurb, def some curbing gone on

- x3 scuffs the seller hadn’t mentioned!! One down through the paint :(. But bumper level

- chipped window screen and bonnet

- some rattle and play in the front forks, but no major concerns

Dave at RPM Specialist up in Harrogate was great and has offered to stay in touch for advice as I go. Def recommend them for a PPI if you that way.

I went back the seller last night and pulled the offer of £22k based on needing some tyres/work in the next 6/12 months and we settled on £21k. Just stopped off at a pub en route back and thoroughly enjoying the drive so far. Much more to be experienced im

sure….!

There’s a lot I want to do to it already, from getting the chips and scuffs sorted to getting decals, intakes and alloys sprayed black…..

Hope you lot think I’ve done a good deal. But I feel happier about the scuffs now I’m behind the wheel. Bring on ownership

Congratulations!!! Glad it all worked out well :)

As mentioned, a serious detail will help.....for the chips and stuff (and the decals) go to Richard Tipper, he might be able to cure those scuff marks you mention, and he'll also manage the wheels to be collected from him over to https://www.lepsons.com/ and then back again. Lepsons are as good as it gets for your alloys.

How is the extended leather, is it in good shape inside?

I don't recall all the details but getting a gen 2 for near £20k is great.

You might want to lower it too, to make its stance look more purposeful

Is this the look you are going for? (from the RPM sold archives)

It’s in decent shape yeah, few indentations and a little shiny in places but more or less good. I think the prev. Owner lives driving it but not a total enthusiast as it looks a bit unloved with the paintwork and some of the wheels and a few cosmetics inside! But all fixable. He always took it to a Porsche specialist so definitely took care. I think he must have know about the scuffs, as he gave me a paint kit he already had?!

Will check out the place you recommend. Think I need to wait a month or two financially to get the buffers back up before I can do any work on it. May as well get quotes though

Hi Matt. Congrats on your purchase.

I'm pushing my budget and looking at a 981 now. Going to see a racing yellow (yes yellow!) one on Thursday and currently trying to arrange to see a grey one on Wednesday. I want a PDK with the paddle shifts.
