crafty1 Posted July 5, 2021 Share Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Porsche Cayman 987.2 S Manual 2009 Current Mileage 74,500 4 previous keepers, 2 keys Arctic silver, Metropole dark blue leather interior with sports seats Purchased from Porsche specialist Ashgood in late December 2016 with 57,000 miles. The car had up to that point FPSH and was fitted with a new clutch shortly after purchase. The plan was to modify the car to cover all bases including fast road driving and the odd track day but still retain practicality and comfort. The brakes were the 1st upgrade, a 997 GT3 brake master cylinder and braided brake lines were installed. Shortly after it was sent to Centre Gravity (Porsche chassis gurus) for Ohlins Road and Track adjustable coil overs to be fitted, the car then featured in 911 and Porsche World in October 2017 From here it was a process of trying to find and fit the best/most cost-effective upgrades to enhance the already analogue 987 platform. Function First from the USA offer some great products and these were used to stiffen up the drive train via their yellow engine insert, semi-semi solid gearbox mounts, and aluminium gear linkage cable inserts all of which help remove slack and enhance drive train feel, gear change and throttle response. The next piece of the jigsaw was fitting a Wavetrac diff which really helps liven up the whole car, traction has never really been an issue with the Cayman but this just makes sure! It also further improves the throttle to drive train response and the car now just digs in and has more drive out of slower corners (even better with PSM off...) and is now more adjustable on the throttle, the Wavetrac comes with a lifetime guarantee and will not wear out like the factory option LSD. The engine is standard apart from the desnork mod and a BMC air filter (for bit more induction noise) and a Carnewal modified back box which sounds great with no drone, the engine uses no oil and is changed annually with Millers Oils NANODRIVE CFS 5w-40 NT+ Fully Synthetic regardless of miles. The gearbox oil was changed in June 2018 at 64,000 miles. The car passes track static noise tests at 101 db at 5,000 rpm. In my nearly 5 year ownership I have done 6 track days, the car has never had an 'off' or been damaged, it has always performed faultlessly however my only real criticism has been the brakes, I tried several different makes of pad but ultimately the small disk size of the factory set up is hard to improve effectively due to heat soak. The car is now fitted with larger fully floating Girodiscs all round and RS29 Pagids and titanium heat shields, the brakes are now superb. I have also fitted a factory short shift kit, a Sprint booster to liven up throttle response and aid with heel toe changes on track and a few visual mods including having the 19" Carrera II wheels painted Porsche Weiss Gold and fitting 5mm spacers and longer GT3 wheel bolts all round. There are a few stone chips on the bonnet and lower rear arches. Otherwise, the car looks great and is well cared for and has for the most part spent the last 5 years in a centrally heated garage on a battery conditioner, the engine is always fully warmed up before being taken past 4k, and on track always do at least one cooling down lap. The car is now a really engaging analogue drive, on the road the Ohlins R+T have great ride quality considering the higher spring rate but at their most impressive when pressing on where the rebound damping and body control is on another level. The car can easy do daily duties and is comfortable on a long journey. The upgrades also make for a competent and enjoyable track car with the Ohlins being 16 way adjustable for rebound damping. The stiffer springs will go with the car but I prefer this new set up for the road. Crossover coolant pipes were checked and where required replaced in 2019. The car wants for nothing mechanically and has bills in excess £10k for all the modifications and associated labour. Selling due to fancy a change and looking for the next project.
