You got me. I’m in love with that car. That is an amazing example.

From the AD sounds like the dealers know their way around a Porsche, are they well known in this community?

I haven't heard of them yet that means nothing 😄

From looking through their sold stock, scroll all the way through, one can tell they must know German makes well as that appears to be 90%+ of their sales, and there are Gt3's Gt4's 911s scattered through their sales.  They might have got it in PX so I am not sure how big of a concern it would be that its not RPM Technick or similar, and it would probably be a few £K more for being so

... they seem switched on and your independent PPI will cut to the chase. That one also has the leather extended dash n' door trims so you'll tick that box. It doesn't have PSE, yet that can be retrofitted or in time you may decide to go with an aftermarket exhaust. Neither Sports Chrono, yet in my R that is wasted on me not being a track person, so I doubt you'd miss that. As a Gen 2 thats a good benchmark and worth test driving, and then try a Gen 2 S and see if you feel the extra umph does it for you.

Try that red and this silver

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107054655978?

that is 50 miles from one another, so could arrange both in a day, and that'll give you a good mix of manual and PDK.

The second one is way above your budget, but always good to get a flavour of whats on offer. That said, I bought my R without even sitting in it, so I am not the best example of what to do!  but your requirements are very broad, hence I feel go check some out is the best advice. Those two are good un's

They are both very very nice...

But I don't want to spend more than £21K if I can.  Expensive year already I'm afraid, and apparently the kids are insisting on being fed on an ongoing basis...

The Red one though - you know you'll likely not spend much in next 12-18+ months and beyond..

I just can't justify the extra few grand to myself right now, plus some other significant spend between now and Nov that I really need to do.. 😞

I will be doing a full PPI before buying. Planning to only by from Trade, as this is a lot of money for me to make a mistake.

you can still arrange a full PPI with a private sale. I wouldn't rule out private if the right car came up, just because it might not come with a 3rd party warranty, of which most Indie dealers put an RAC warranty on it, which is some peace of mind but probably challenged and worthless on anything substantial - no experience but thats my hunch.

Fully agree with Julian on this one. Unless you are buying from one of the well established Porsche specialists (RPM, ePorsch, 911V etc) then buying from a trader will offer very little in terms of benefit and will mean that you are greatly limiting your search pool. If there is an issue, they will direct you to their (worthless) third party warranty and so the added protection is likely just a load of additional hassle. It's also far more likely that a duff car will be traded in versus sold privately. For a dealer to sell a car for £21k, they would probably need to have picked it up for around £17k. That means that whoever let it go was willing to let it go substantially below market rate. This won't be the case for all but it is worth bearing that in mind when dealing with some of the non-specialist traders.

Personally, for an enthusiast car, I prefer to buy privately so that I can suss out the seller and (hopefully) save a little versus buying the same car from a trader. For a new (less than three year old car) I always just buy from a main dealer - you pay a premium but you get a proper manufacturers warranty.

In your situation, a decent PPI will probably be better insurance than buying only from traders (well reputed specialists aside).

Sounds like you should save a little more and then buy the car you want.  I wouldn't compromise as you will regret it.  Wait and get the car you want; those few months will be worth it.

OK - understood and thanks for the comments.

I didn't think the Silver was Poverty spec, I think i'd be happy with that spec..  so what I am missing (and what was that car missing?).

You say buy the car you want but this would be my first mid engine, and my first porsche.. admission for entry and expectations are going to be less for me than you seasoned owners... or did you feel same as me - get one, then played the 'if only' game..

thanks again for all your feedback. really helping my decision making.

I waited 4 months for the right car to pop up - still have it 4.5 years later.  If your plan is to own it for multiple years, then buy the right car.

If you just want to dip a toe, then your principles about getting the right car can lower.  But, again, if that short term goal becomes a long term one, you will regret not waiting and getting the car you would have preferred.

Not something I've done with a Porsche, but have only made this mistake once in the past; never again.

While I wouldn't say that the silver car was a special spec, I don't think it was a bad one either: heated seats, cruise control (not standard, amazingly), Bose, PCM 3. Personally I like the 'Metropole Blue' leather interior but then I am biased as mine has it (and its 'Aqua Blue' on the outside too!).

Other colours are certainly more striking and eye catching, but whether this is a good thing or not depends on your point of view.

As a side note: those are Boxster S II wheels, not Cayman S wheels as the ad stares, and I like them!

Other cars will come along, options that many seem to want are:

Sports seats (plastic backed with  shoulder support) - I have these and like them.

Sport Chrono if it's a PDK - I don't have this but also am not very interested in it as I have a manual.

Porsche Switchable Exhaust (PSE) - I don't have this but I would like it

Extended Leather - I don't have this, but I am also not into it as a luxury car so am not bothered.

PASM - I don't have this and I specifically didn't want it as they often go wrong and are more expensive to fix when they do, plus I prefer a well sorted and simple passive setup.

19 inch wheels - these are for looks (carrera classics are my favourite), I have a set of 17s and 18s, I run 17s on the road, 18s on the track.

The truth is, I don't really get the whole 'spec' thing as much as many others on here, but my car is very much for driving enjoyment both on road and track, and I was only interested in options to serve this aim primarily (plus heated seats which were a necessary concession to my wife).

Some cars are certainly better specced than others for some or all needs. But a lot of the spec can be changed (for hugely varying prices) so as long as you are getting value for money on the spec you buy, you might decide to see what you like and upgrade later.

Hell, you can even take the 2.9 out and drop a 3.8 in at a later date if you so wish (for an eye watering sum of money, or course).

Bland, could it be any blander?!? 🤔.... hardly the answer to a mid life crisis. Sorry but in my opinion that is a terrible choice!

Hahaha, yes, had forgotten that mid life crisis was the goal, you'll probably be wanting a guards red or speed yellow one!

I am struggling to see what is wrong with the red one. Ok, it is a few £K over budget but worth a negotiation. Here to help the original poster but I thought the red one was 'case closed'.

Yeah, I appreciate that some budget limits are harder than others though, but it could always be worth a negotiation punt for the OP. Makes it easier to play hard ball with a 'best I can do' offer of £21K if you know you mean it!

definitely worth a go. And maybe this is me, but I kind of figured most people have a number in mind yet have a +10% contingency (as such) if the right car comes along, but I wholly appreciate we all have have different modus operandi.

They’re more Audi and VW but seem to focus on quality examples of other makes too, nothing seems to linger for sale very long. That red one looked 👌🏻
