Looking to buy first Porsche 987.1 or 987.2 or S

Recommended Posts

Stumbled across this on my rounds and wondered if it might be suitable? 2011, Gen 2, 45k, Spyder wheels, Sports Chrono; it's reasonably priced for the spec.

The thing that stands out most to me is that it was on 44k when Ashgood had it for the 8-year service in 11/2019 and it's on 45k now so I'd want to know the full story behind the past couple of years. I've never heard of the seller so you'd want to do some homework there and possibly factor in a PPI with a specialist. Be interesting to read what others thought on this one.

it is reasonably priced.... considering the dealer markup, all told, seems too cheap to me  - something must be up with it. A non scientific/mechanic reply from me -  just feels too cheap and too good to be true.

Thanks- thanks looks good.

would you be worried that us had sat still for 12 months?

Any issues that you should look for?

It looks due for a service would the next service be a big one? I think the cycle every 2 years with every 4 year and 6 year increasing in maintenance required?

How much would you expect a 2,4,6 year service to be roughly?

I tend to over change oil so do you recommend changing oil annually regardless?

(previous car had a 21K oil service but I’d change every 6-8K anyway as what’s £40 of oil every 6-12 months!)

Hi Dean, I’m south east and looks like you are NW, but what are the details of your gen1 please?

I don't think the 12 months of not being used much would be a big issue necessarily. It has generally been used.

I had my 12 year service in April including oil, filters, spark plugs, gearbox oil, brake and clutch fluid, and polyrib belt. This came to £569 at my indie (Zuffenhaus). Significantly more at an OPC obviously, though even this can vary significantly.

See here for an idea of what needs doing and when: https://www12.porsche.com/filestore/download/uk/none/porscheservice-servicepricing-boxster-cayman-987/default/0fa362b8-1d2c-11e8-bbc5-0019999cd470/Boxster-Cayman-(Type-987).pdf

P.S. On the oil - I think most of us on here would recommend annual changes even though the maintenance schedule is every 2 years (or 20K miles), sometimes for no other reason than to get someone knowledgeable looking over the car at least once a year (even if that someone is you!).

V useful - thanks.

Seems a cheap price even if it was a private sale

TBH I hadn't looked into the company at all when I posted the link. I would do a few  things like check out their forecourt on Google Maps and see if I could find more info about them at Companies House before calling them to find out more. I did notice that there are 6,173 matches for companies registered to the post code used on the web site: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/search/companies?q=KT22+7PL so I assume that there is no forecourt at that address.

Any car purchase has to feel right and, if it does not, you just have to move onto the next one.

Google maps is a good shout - there is a Regis office there (office space to let) used by small companies or those wanted basics in a locations for small amounts of cash. The cars pics seem to be taken outside the regis office. I doubt they leave their stock there overnight.

Can't see it on Companies House. I suspect it will be some sort of slae or return car broker sort of setup, selling cars on behalf of the actual owner. Who knows?

Hello mate, don't know if you're still looking, but the below seems like a very solid value option to me (particularly if you can take advantage of his 'open to sensible offers' statement). To be clear, this one is very much base spec, complete with part leather seats. Pre-empting some heat 😅 , it will not impress anyone looking for a special or unusual spec at all, but if what you want is to get into a Gen 2 987 cayman for (relatively) low upfront and ongoing costs, it could be a winner.

Mileage is undoubtedly high (105K) but the ad is clear on the long list of work that has been done including pretty much everything that usually goes wrong:

"New gearbox cables (90k), coolant hoses, New engine and transmission mounts, New gear shifter bushings, All coil packs + spark plugs replaced, suspension overhaul (all drop-links and ARB bushes, front top mounts + bearings, and control arm tuning forks have all been replaced, Brake calipers refurbished and Goodridge stainless steel brake hoses added, new front pads and discs, Headlight lenses refurbished, New Air Oil Separator hoses, New exhaust muffler bolts and gaskets, New tyres fairly recently, replaced window regulator, wheelarches refurbished with stone guard paint (these areas are prone to rust, but now immaculate)."

Seems to me like this one could be well looked after and very solid mechanically despite its high mileage. Should still be subject to a PPI of course.

Edit: Additional one here, in a nicer spec (meteor + beige interior + 18" Boxtster S III wheels) for sure: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107195214493

The ad is less upfront about the work and condition though, which doesn't necessarily mean that anything is wrong with it. The ad for the high mileage car above suggest an owner who is very knowledgeable and careful, and that's what I personally want to see when buying a car.
