PHSS Santa Pod 3 April

Recommended Posts

I see the PH meet is at Santa Pod next weekend: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=229&t=1580992

Anyone fancy it?

I used to race there in the 80's and attended when Sammy Miller did the 1/4 mile in a time of 3.58 seconds at 386.26 mph in his rocket car, Vanishing Point.

You can race another car for an extra £30 (unlimited runs).

Still plenty of room in the 1500 capacity: http://www.pistonheads.com/calendar/event.asp?i=57327

Taking the 981 down the drag? ;)

I would, for old times sake, but what puts me off is the other driver's skill and the condition of their car.

It may seem odd to worry about straight line racing, but strange things happen to minds and mechanicals when put under the stress and scrutiny of a heads up race, being watched by a crowd.

I've seen plenty of side swiping collisions during my years in the sport. So I think I'd just watch the "odd" pairings and surprise victories on the track, and mooch about some amongst the (currently) 500+ cars attending.

Wow! Just found, for the first time, film of me racing in the 80's!

In the right hand lane...

...and that's my Mini Metro following me down the strip. :)

Interesting clips, thanks.

Was that  a 1960s TVR Griffith/Grantura at the beginning of the second link? It appeared to have tail lights matching those of the Mk1 Cortina it was up against.

A few pics from SPR today: https://flic.kr/s/aHskueMRPz

Apart from a 911 Turbo S at 11.5 seconds for the 1/4 mile, the most impressive car was a mapped S3, posting late 11 second runs consistently. It blew away the Mustang 5.0L; 458; M5s; well EVERYTHING else! 981 Cayman S did 13.3.
