Wheel Cleaner

Recommended Posts

What does everyone use to clean the brake dust from their wheels?  I've been using an APC diluted with water but I think there could be a better option.  Wonder wheels etc...?

And whilst i'm asking, any good tools/gadgets for cleaning the inside of the wheels that people have discovered?

I use Auto Glym car shampoo & conditioner, same as for the bodywork. Dust comes off easily, then rinse and chamois dry if I can be bothered.

Was warned off the acid based stuff years ago, but many are acid free now.

I use Valet Pro Bilberry when I need something stronger than just shampoo. Normal use is diluted 10:1 but if needed I'll make it a bit stronger.
If the wheels are thoroughly cleaned (Valet Pro Dragons Breath, or any Iron-x type product) then sealed with something like gtechnic C5 they shouldnt need too much product to clean them
I'd stay away from wonder wheels, Ive seen what it does to concrete

I'd avoid any acid based wheel cleaners, I've seen pink brake calipers on Porsches as result, not the best look!

Stick with an all purpose cleaner and dilute to higher strength if required.

The gtechniq wheel sealant is good, makes cleaning in future really really easy.

...unless the car is Guards Pink of course, then it might match? :Smilies_Sad_Cry:

I've found Wonder Wheels to work fantastically well.  However it does say "not suitable for chrome wheels" and it really does mean it.  (don't ask me how I know..)

Bilt Hammer or my favourite, which is Sonax.

Both are safe and not acidic. I cover the whole wheel, inside and out, plus the brakes.

Agitate with a detailing brush, then jet off. Then use a large wheel woolie with soapy water. These can reach the entire wheel inner area too, without you reaching through the spokes by hand :-)

Really quick and easy!

btw, Porsche brake dust seems to be easy to remove, compared to BMW dust!

After over 10 years of BMW ownership, it's such a relief to be able do the wheels quickly, compared to the 30mins that I used to take!

I use Chemical Guys "Decon" (dissolves iron contaminate), then "Diablo" wheel cleaner using a bucket with hybrid V7 shampoo. I have found wheel woollies and a soft detailing brushes get everywhere.

Today, I have just put a coat of chemical guys "SS6" (second skin 6- hybrid coating).

Rain stopped play though as wanted to end with a coat of wax.

And then, tyre black with an applicator pad and "Blue Guard rubber protectant"

PS, I do not have shares in Chemical Guys products :-)

PSS, I do recommend Chemicals guys, but there customer service is shocking- so buy from a stockist...

Hi Richjar
Just a word of caution - I am also a big fan of CG stuff but be careful which wax you use on your wheels. If its not designed for high temperatures it may cause contamination issues on the wheels/brakes. Don't ask me how I know :(
CG 50/50 wax remains one of my favourite waxes, but for wheels I use FinishKare 1000P sealant wax if I'm not sealing with gtechniq

Good point re wheel polish, I have wheel wax (cant remember the brand). Must have been a worrying point when you realised the stuff you used started melting...

Thankfully it ended well, we realised what he'd done so did a couple of tests then stripped it when it started to go streaky :)
I dread to think what might have happened if he'd gone for a hoon and it had contaminated disks and pads
