Popular Post barryb
Hi For a few weeks now I have noticed a drip of oil on the floor, worse after a drive. Looking underneath I couldn't spot anything obvious. Fearing the worse I put the car on the lift and cleaned everything especially an unusually oily sump plate. After a few day I looked again and patch of oil had appeared on the sump plate but no obvious source. I noticed a small indentation on the plate so resorted to a bright light and a magnifying glass. I found the slimmest of cracks about 10cm long with a bead of oil on it. I ordered a new plate and replaced it. With the plate removed it was still very difficult to see the crack let alone photograph it. After 3 days all is well. I can only assume I caught a stone or hard object, it's hard to believe that it has been any length of time as the car uses no oil between changes. It was fun changing the sump plate with oil everywhere despite leaving to drain for a day. Barry
barryb
Hi I ran some black felt tip int the crack to make it more visible to photograph. Barry
Neil_jdmr
Good find, 👍. Is there not any kind of sump guard usually, i thought there was an undertray fitted.
barryb
Hi Neil On the 987.1 there is a plastic tray in front of the sump and the aluminium one behind the sump leaving the sump plate exposed. I believe there is an aftermarket sump guard but the opinion is that it interferes with engine air flow. I think I may have been just unlucky with the hit but lucky I found it before it dumped 7.75 litres of oil on the highway. Barry
