barryb
Hi Just changed the starter motor after hearing occasional rasping on start up. Fairly easy job, but I can't get over how small the starter motor is compared to my other cars. The solenoid is almost half the size of the motor. Just an observation. Mavrik
Chances are your original starter could've been serviced and reused... Common for the solenoid throwout bearing and mechanism to gum up causing the characteristic whine/screech on start up... Easy job to clean & relube tbh... barryb
Hi Mavrik Yes I thought about that, then I thought get a repair kit and while I'm there new brushes oh and while there being replaced skim the armature. Let someone else do all that just replace and forget for another 100km. I have noticed how much faster the new starter motor turns the engine. Not a lot of money for replacement in the scale of things like getting stranded with a jammed starter. Barry

And it's the first job I did on my 987. It's a PIG of a job to remove the thing; getting long extension bars on the various bolts and whatnot. (On my old 944 the starter is hanging on the bottom of the bellhousing and removing two bolts gets it off. Jacking the car up is the longest part of the job .... ) However dismantling it, cleaning the gunge out and and re-lubing it with some silicon grease was easy enough, and it's worked better ever since.
