Experience of Dove House or RPMSpecialistCars?

Idlewild

Hello all,

I'm in the market for my first Porsche and both the aforementioned businesses have examples for sale that I am interested in.

I was wondering whether anybody here had anything good or bad to say about either of them?

Really good experience with Dove House, the car had new front disks and some exhaust clamps replace as part of the prep. Developed a fault just after the warranty expired and they agreed for me to get it fixed locally and they picked up the bill. They should have picked it up before but with used cars things slip through but they sorted no problem. Also ordered me a user manual for free, small thing but shows good customer service. Only issue, if you put any on a credit card they charge 2% (the card handlers fee). Actually, a top tip. Sainsbury's do 27months interest free credit which is a billy bargain, just don't forget to pay it off.

I've bought a couple of cars from RPM, use them for servicing and can't recommend them highly enough. Very knowledgeable, really nice guys, very reasonably priced and they've gone out of their way to be of great help many times for me. If you're looking at the red 987.2 Cayman they have for sale, that's my previous car (I now have a 987.2 S I bought from them) and I'm happy to answer any questions about it (summary: I ran it with no expense spared, it's got new discs and pads all round, new clutch and DMF, new transmission cables and the upgrade kit from the 981 that stops them snapping again, was a great car for me and never used a drop of oil in the 20K miles I had it for).

Correction, I did about 30K in it! The one thing I will say about low mileage cars is that in my experience from around the 40K mark they start needing things like clutches, discs, etc. doing so I either go for low miles or beyond that milestone so the work's already been done. But these Gen 2 engines seem rock solid so personally I'm not bothered about the miles on the car, just so long as it's been taken care of and had the relevant work done to it. Had they not had the perfectly specced S for me I'd still be driving it now.

Many thanks all.

Yes I did have a look at your old Porsche John; very nice it is too! Obviously well cared for (with a lot of money spent on it).

The only negative for me is that the mileage is a little high for something that I am likely to be doing over 10k miles a year in. Dove House have a very similar one with half the miles on the clock for only £2.5k more...

Dove House. I've been dealing with Dove House and will be picking up a 987.2 S tomorrow. I have to say that to date the whole process has been very pleasant, with the main point of contact being Harvey Beaumont. I always consider initial impressions to be paramount, this guy has it nailed.

The level of service has been exceptional, there's never been any pressure, a genuine interest in your needs, and just honest information freely given by a true enthusiast who would happily talk motors all day long...insert a constantly yawning wife! Harvey sensed this and gave her the keys to go sit and play in the Aventador and Ferrari California! Coffee's not too bad either!

To be fair there was little scope for a price reduction, it had been recently reduced, however; by way of prep the car has had a brake fluid change, 2 x new 'N' tyres, 12 months MOT and I've just received a phone call to say it's good to go, now being valeted and then a "oh, by the way we decided to change out all 4 dics and have fitted new pads, they were not to our in house requirements". This was said in such a manner, just slipped into the conversation really, as to be 'routine'. Nice. (I had previously checked the discs and really didn't consider them to be worn anywhere near to limits).

So, all in all I'm pretty happy so far.

That's sounds fantastic! Congratulations on the new car. And thank you for the detailed write up; it sounds like they are a 'proper' outfit.

Hello Idlewild,

No probs, I just feel that in general a 'poor' experience can often attract a lot of attention, and it's not often that a 'positive' one gets the same coverage. Just human nature I guess?

I was more than happy with the overall experience at DH, if this post can help someone to achieve the same level of satisfaction then that can only be a good thing.

If it's a good day, you need a drive out and you fancy looking at some amazing cars then it's worth the trip.

Similar, Dove House was the first time  id ever bought from a proper dealer. Always a bit sceptical, you hear so many horror stories but was more than happy with my experience. Not much room form negotiation, may just be my poor skills on that front. Managed to get a token £500 off, i guess they trade on their reputation which is fine if they keep their high standards. They won independent dealer of the year this year On the Porcheawards website.

Ashgood I would say are one step below that, I get the impression their margins are perhaps lower and volume higher, for example I can't imagine them replacing all the brake discs or other bits without being prompted or negotiating, that being said I think they price the cars accordingly. The handover was nice and after having a problem with door and the clutch they were good to deal with, all their cars come with a 3 month warranty but that does not include 'consumables' and condensers are specifically mentioned as off limits. I'd buy with them again without hesitation but with hindsight I'd probably have an independent inspection done first to be 100 pct sure car was fine.

Are Ashgood a similar proposition?

I saw a car at Ashgood a couple of days prior to going with Dove House. Seemed very good and would have gone for the one i saw. The DH one had PASM (which i was keen on) and PCM3 and BOSE audio which were nice bonuses. Not a huge price difference but ashgood were a little cheaper, difficult to tell with the various options

After visiting, I can't help but agree. They did seem a bit 'off' when I was there.
