graham.reeds
Are cayman air bags universal or are they specific to the wheel? Can I pull the middle out of my wheel and plug it into the new wheel? If not how do I check if my air bag is compatible?
SpannerMan
They are specific to the same type of wheel, not to individual wheels.
graham.reeds
So an airbag for a 987 will be compatible with most other in that family 981/718? How do I check if my airbag will fit? EDIT: My steering wheel has a circular centre console and the planned one has a irregular hexagon one. Is the airbag connected to the cap? Mavrik
I'd imagine they are only interchangeable if the wheel/airbag cover is the same shape?

duncan
Looking at 987 parts listings the bag bit (technical term) isn’t shown separately from the complete bit in the middle (again a technical term). So Porsche aren’t expecting the unit to be broken down. For 987 Caymans the part number for the complete air bag unit are all referenced with 997 parts numbers. Elephant Racing have PETs for 981 and 718 models, the airbag units for (say) 718 models all have a part number starting 982, so as complete units they are not referenced as being interchangeable. graham.reeds
This is the wheel I have (but in leather, not alcantara): https://www.design911.co.uk/mobile/#part;id=129306 This is the wheel I'd like to have: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F323203166380
Trickle
Why on earth would you swap a Sport Wheel for the Gen1 basic wheel?? Either way, the airbag model is a completely shape for each of those wheels and will not fit.
graham.reeds
Because the wheel I have is an acreage of black plastic surrounded by a ring of black leather with black stitching. The wheel I am looking at has white stitching and white top ring and looks better. If you look you can see there is a circular shape in the middle of the eBay wheel which is where the actual airbag mechanism would sit. I thought that an airbag would be separate from the cover, though the cover may be damaged beyond repair when used.
duncan
Surely if the cover is damaged because the bag has deployed then you will need need both the cover and the bag, hence(?) only being available as a complete unit?
