Manual box not playing ball

Recommended Posts

Hey all, i had a few leaks on my 07 S manual, garage found waterpump and a seal failed on the gearbox end. So they droppes the engine out to do that and fit a couple of new fiddly coolant pipes too. Everything has been great, but ive semi-lost 2nd gear about 2 days ago, like it doesnt go into place nicely like the others, the others you be firm and you feel a little notch as it locates, 2nd just pulls back and its hit and miss if it goes in, if i change quickly and accelerate hard you hear and feel it jump into place. When cold no issues feels as is should. Is there any adjustments i can do to help or is it a case of box needs rebuilding?

Its a cable gearchange linkage. Did they get the cable back on properly and then adjust them? If not that might  be whats wrong.

Any decent Porsche specialist should be able to adjust them for you, or it might need new cables.

Apparently quite common for them to snap also...

Any idea how to adjust? I have the mechanics qualifications, but not done any work on a porsche other than batterys and bulbs, and now a kn filter lol

Done the adjustment, slightly better, if i keep pressure on the gearbox with the throttle it stays in gear and doesnt grind, let off and it grinds and jumps out of gear. Next step would maybe drain the gearbox oil? Its done 99207miles and i believe never been changed since 2007. If anything like my mk2 golf years ago, i dropped the oil and topped it back up and was spot on

The car is due a gearbox oil change at 12 years or 120K miles, whichever comes first.  But I'd be surprised if that's your problem.

You mentioned you did the adjustment, what did you do exactly?

I have the tool from porsche, clipped into place, pushed the spring sleeves back and twisted to lock them, pulled thr cables out, pulled everything tight, relocated cables and dropped the sleeves back in place. It helped abit, but 2nd is still abit crap, if i put pressure on the gearstick when driving 2nd grinds like mad, if i just put into 2nd accelerate it stays in gear, coast and grinds then jumps out

Emptied, stil abit gold in colour but had bits of swarf in, fillee back up (wishing i had decent pump equipment as took about 3 hours), its noy quieter, and changes smoother, but still jumps out of gear when coasting, so sounds like 2nd gear syncro :(

whats a rough sort of price for remove, fix and refit? £1000?

Are the cables secured properly in the mountings at the gearbox end?  They have a tendency to come loose.  Also worth checking that the mounting bracket itself is secured properly to the gearbox before pulling the box out.

Sports and Classic Ltd in Cheshire appear to have a good reputation rebuilding Porsche gearboxes.  On their website, they list the 987S Cayman/Boxster 2nd gear fix at £1399 +VAT (so £ 1680 inc.) if you ship the box to them or £1700 + VAT (£2040) if they remove the box.

They are saying the 987 box repair is a new service.  My recollection when I owned my 987 was that no-one was repairing them due to lack of parts availability so I doubt there are many places that can do it,

A used box might be a cheaper option.  I think the 987 6 speed boxes are less prone to 2nd gear problems than the 986 box was so I'd personally not rule out that option.

How easy are the cables to access? I know the ones in th cabin were secure, and they run over the top ofthe engine fine, and i saw one which links to a plastic wheel but not where its bolted to, and i couldnt see otherside

The cables are attached to a bracket that's bolted to the top of the gearbox.  The cables clip into the bracket.  Here's a picture of the bracket on the top of the gearbox.  The cables clip into the U shaped slots in the bracket.

I remember my cables were already ty-wrap'd to the bracket to stop them becoming disconnected, when I bought the car.  The chap who bought our other 987S last year had one pop out completely recently.  The AA guy popped it back in and told him it was a common problem.

I'm not saying that's the problem but certainly worth double checking both the mounting bracket is securely bolted to the box and can't move around, and both cables are securely attached, before forking out for a replacement/rebuilt box.

Ill have a look when i get chance :) but my black wheel on the side with the rod on it, the rod is mounted to the top and made of plastic, and ill check the mounting bolts :)

im guessing to drop the engine out, its easier to do it with the gearbox still attached?

Maybe worth replacing the cables first or the end caps/linkages, before thinking of getting the box out. It is known for them to wear/stretch and the end caps to come off.

Lot of people upgrade to these Numeric racing cables, but they aren't cheap, Porsche originals might be less...
