987.2 Steering Rack - Reconditioning

Recommended Posts

It appears my front end suspension refesh has unearthed a leaking steering rack (one of the boots had alot of fluid).  Must be recent, as I last checked fluid level at start of the month.

Anyone used these guys WPS in Bristol - seem to get a good rap:

It's either that or get hammered for a new one...

Cars on 59k miles

£325 to recondition the rack seems very reasonable (in comparison to the cost of a new one). I suspect they would be worth a punt.

Yes, you are lucky to get any change out of £1500 for a new one which seem crazy.  It seem to be the seals that let go as it's not like the rack and pinion will be worn after 60k miles.

Cars in for a front end suspension refresh so if it was going to happen glad it did now as a pain to extract and forces a wheel alignment etc.

its times like this I'm glad I handed it to my Indie as these jobs ALWAYS seem to escalate of Porkers once you go digging...

Indeed. Have to say it was a bit of a worry when I found out the cost of a new rack should it go wrong, so I appreciate you sharing this as an alternative should it ever happen. Could you feel that there was something up with the rack?

Turns out my Indie has used WPS alot so it's booked into them.  Current turnaround is 7 to 10 working days which is double the normal.

Looks like my Indie seems to put alot of business their way so turnaround is only 3 days.  Seems a good company to deal with so far.

Not really felt any different but I think the leak was very slow. The hydraulic fluid was a bit low when I bought it in Sept 2020 and I topped it up.  It has only moved slightly off that in the 4k miles I'd done. Thing is the boot retains the fluid so it can look worse than it maybe is.

I'm getting coolant pipes done at same time with the subframe dropped (saves a few hundred quid compared to doing them solo). I'd thought of tackling that myself but I have no hoist and at 51 just not up to laying under a car for hours...
