New owner looking for PCM upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have just picked up a lovely 2010 Gen 2 S Cayman.

Really happy with the car however not being able to stream podcasts is very annoying, and the PCM3.0 sat nav is diabolical.  So I want to add Android Auto into the car.    From what I have found, there seems to be two options, and I would appreciate some advice on which to do / avoid.

First option is from design911, cost £350
https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod152027/WIFI-Wireless-Apple-CarPlay--AirPlay--Android-Solution-for-Porsche-PCM30-Cayenne---Panamera---Macan---Boxster---Cayman---911/
Seems to add all the features I want. It would be nice to add a camera in just because...

Second option is NV Automotive, cost £440(inc delivery)
https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto  (2nd one down)

Both seem to have great and similar  specs but the design 911 kit is cheaper and seems a much more straight forward install.

Has anybody got any experience with either kit?

Thanks

Hi Tim.

The link below covers your second option as well as some decent pics and all the info you’ll need.

Hope it’s okay to link this here.

3rd option

https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod21580/Multimedia-Connecting-Cable-for-Porsche/

+

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bovee-Wireless-Bluetooth-Interface-Integration/dp/B00B52LLJ6

Designed for integrating wireless music streaming for the PCM3 (works with Android or iPhone).

Shown with an iPhone but product says it works with Android.

Myself and many forum members here have gone this route. Much cheaper and save the money for when Porsche bring out their official PCCM+ upgrade.

Thanks Julian.  I did see this approach but discounted it as I want to be able to use the apps and sat nav  from my phone.

Also the PCCM+ won't include the Gen 2 update for at least a year I think.

These both follow the same install method.

Remove PCM, Open it up, connect cables without breaking the screen cable then replacing it all.

Thank you Jaketame

I emailed design911 and they said it is a PCM install as you have put.  I expect that they are the same unit.

I think of myself of being able to do it but finding 5 hours of time is difficult.

I’m hoping on PCM update direct from Porsche

I found a 4th option!

I brought this cheeky little device from Amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09G9ZZF56/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_YVMF35DYDRMMHGVSJ6AT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

connects to the 3.5mm jack and USB,  gives me Bluetooth streaming in the car through the AUX option.   It removes the need for the Bovee box and the Y cable.
I don't get the media information on the screen,  but for £14 it fits & works lovely.

V interesting - How is the sound quality? About the same as USB or CD? I imagine perfect for audio podcasts..

How does it handle phone calls - I guess you can have a phone bluetoothed to the PCM and this device..

Sound quality is great.   on par with USB.

My phone can connect to two bluetooth devices at the same time,  so PCM for calls  and the YP04 for media.

I took a punt and went for the same device - I was expecting something 'acceptable' and thought I could use for podcast/spoken word for long drives, but this is actually pretty good for under £15 - I'd say about the same quality as the USB port, has enough bass to keep me happy and on my Sound Package Plus its actually good, far better than expected and far cheaper than the £100 Bovee.

I've tried some old bluetooth devices in previous cars and they have been dire - no bass etc but this is pretty good.

Thanks for the recommend!
