Engine whine, rpm dependent

Recommended Posts

My 07 Cayman has developed an engine whine that I can't solve.
It seems to be more evident from 1500-3000 rpm, above that it's drowned out by the exhaust. It is rpm dependent, does it in gear and neutral, warm or cold, ac on or off. It always seems to be there in those rpm.
Mentioned to the indy in the last service, they changed a pulley but whine is still there.
No coolant leaks, no change in performance.

Any ideas?

Check the belt deflection is in tolerance (not sure what that figure is)?  Sounds like it's stretched and is causing the whine.  Only other options would be the tensioners.

I'm not that familiar with the Cayman's belt drive to comment much further, unfortunately...

A quick and easy check would be to remove the engine cover behind the seats (first remove the insulation/carpet) remove the belt and spin all the pulleys. The tensioner pulley normally (and hopefully) is the first one to go. Water pumps normally rattles rather than creating a whine. Also alternators and aircon compressor's clutch could be where the problem is.

I know it sounds hard but it's a very easy thing to do. Use a breaking bar to release the tension from the tensioner arm. Hope it helps.

Cheers

hi

if the whine is there with the car stationary that rules out the gearbox.

next remove drivebelt,if whine is still there its internal engine problem if it stops its idler pulley or anything run off the belt(a/c,w/pump,alternator,p/s pump)
