Popular Post aslan
Thought I'd start a thread showing how I get on with the car. I bought the car in December from an OPC, I'd been looking for about 4 months and actually viewed the car a couple of months earlier, but discounted it as it seemed too expensive and wasn't my ideal spec. However, while on a work course in Rome I was casually scanning adverts and saw that it had been slashed in price from £26k to £22k. Phoned up and agreed a deal there and then, they actually had someone from another dealership there to pick it up for another customer to view, but managed to put a stop on that. Spec is 18k miles, sports seats, leather dash, BOSE, rear park assist, 19" carrera classic wheels. A reasonable price with the 2 year Porsche warranty and 12 months tax included. Anyway, 2 weeks later collected it from the OPC, day of collection, it's immaculate and clearly been looked after. Grey full leather Interior.. I was bit unsure about it at first, I still think black looks better but it's growing on me Didn't get to drive it much over Christmas ect, but did get it out one glorious winter day for a good drive and a few photos.
Popular Post aslan
After a few more drives I decided I wanted to try smaller wheels, so after eventually finding some original 17's for sale on ebay, I put an offer in and got them for £400 with tyres, but 6 hour round trip to get them. Main reason for the change is I wanted an improved ride over the 19s I got the wheels swapped over last week, still early days but think I prefer them. The ride is less firm and steering feel improved due to less width up front. Added benefits seem to be about 4kg less weight per wheel and better fuel economy. There is less grip upfront and would probably want wider wheels if I was tracking it, but for road it seems great. Looks are very subjective, and it certainly looked odd when I first changed them. I have got used to it and happy with the look, although other people seem to think I am crazy!! Before After
twopointnine
I like the style of your wheels, easier to clean than those on my car. Visually the 17s take a little getting used to but in reality driving comfort is probably more important than looks.
aslan
Yes easy to clean, although so we're the 19s I had. They do take a bit of getting used to looks wise but I am warming to them. Long drive to the PH Sunday service at the weekend reconfirmed that the ride is so much better, and I don't feel like I am missing out on the twisties either, steering feels better and enjoying the car more than I did. Now I've decided to keep them I've had some PS2s fitted to the rear and initial impressions seem good. Costco charged £128 each fitted. Porsche Guildford wanted £220 each.... Any idea what a set of 19 inch carrera classic wheels are worth? Excellent condition with almost new continental N rated tyres.
DJMC
For your old wheels/tyres I'd say anything from £600 - £1000 depending on luck and if someone out there currently wants them? Should you hold on to them for a while longer, just to make sure you prefer the 17" wheels?
aslan
Thanks, having paid £400 for the 17s with worn rear tyres I'd hope they are worth more than £600, but like you say depends on having right buyer at the time. Maybe I should just keep in case I decide to track it in the future.
aslan
Couple of updates, starting with a recent PH Sunday Service. Some very nice cars there and managed to get a couple of pics of mine taken by a pro.
Popular Post aslan
Then I took a day trip to Belgium to visit Carnewal Still early days but initial impression is very positive, not very noticable when cruising or low revs, but certainly a bit more noise on start up and when you go through the revs!

Shame you couldn't drive the tunnel on the way back eh? Mine took a good couple of hundred miles i'd say before it stopped improving, sounds great now and like you say at a cruise it's no more noise than the standard exhaust.

Haha yes, not found a tunnel yet but it does sound good, a nice raspy Porsche sound without any drone, every Cayman owner should have one!
Popular Post aslan
Time for an update, took the car on a European road trip for my honeymoon, covering about 3,800 miles in 3 weeks, visiting Stuttgart, Bavaria, Italian Lakes, Tuscany, Amalfi Coast and Swiss alps. Had a great time and the car was fantastic. It's on trips like this where you really get to know the car properly. I had no issues at all, comfy for the big distances, fun on the mountain roads, and fast on the Autobahns. It could also store a large amount of stuff when you pack carefully. The Carnewal has run in very nicely now and was great to howl that through some of the many tunnels we went through. A few comments/ things I learnt:- Autobahns - my first experience, plenty do have limits and those without are often too busy to stretch the legs, but there were a few occasions when it really opened up. It is such an intense experience, you really have to be so alert to mirrors, traffic far ahead and the movements of other cars. Closing speeds can be massive and pretty dangerous unless you are paying 100% attention. I was generally happy cruising at around 100mph where you are overtaken by all sorts, but I did put my foot down a couple of times and got to 148mph on one occasion without any drama. It might be the small engine of the range, but it is still a quick car and was still pulling. I had the brakes, tyres, geo all checked before I went, and the car felt rock solid even at those speeds. Porsches are rare in Italy - I only saw 2 others the whole time I was there, a 911 and boxster. Amalfi Coast - I had heard it was a nightmare to drive, but it was even worse than I expected. I would never take my car there again, and it was lucky to come away without any prangs and wing mirrors in tack. The locals are absolutely insane drivers. Carnewal - this is the best mod I have ever done, if you are thinking of doing it just get it done. Transforms the noise without any drone on the motorway. I have a video somewhere of it in a tunnel which I will try and upload. Fuel economy/oil useage - Averages 31.7mpg over the whole trip which is pretty acceptable. The oil did drop one level after a long day on the Autobhan at high speeds, topped it up and didn't use any for the remaining 2,800 odd miles. Sadly we are buying a bigger house and it is likely the Cayman will have to go, gutted as I really love the car but maybe I will be back in a couple of years. DJMC
5th photo - that's some speed camera! I did the Amalfi coast in 2014, on a public bus, and vowed then never to drive it myself. Also never to drive in Rome. Every car there has scrapes on all four corners.

Haha it does look a bit like one, that was a art structure on the Timmlejoch pass. I actually enjoyed riding on the bus there after driving, they are the king of the road and everyone else just moves for them.

However I need to free up some funds and at least I had the opportunity to really enjoy and drive it properly. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to stell and then in a few years I can look at getting a gen 2 S or R, even a 981 S/GTS.
MarkGTS
A GTS might be a bargain in a few years, mines already lost quite a bit - wish I'd bought an R if I'm honest, especially as they seem to be going the other way!
