Why “possibly with good reason” is guards red rare on a 987?

The colour just doesn't do it for me in those pics, might be the dense black wheels too but the whole car looks a bit 'flat' and 'blocky' to my eye.

Can look very different in the flesh though. Interestingly, I could level similar criticism on Ashgood's 981C too, but a friend has a 981C in guards and it looks great in reality so may just be something about the way Ashgood do their photos.

Guards is rare on 987s (possibly with good reason 😅 ), but if it floats your boat then this one from Ashgood is (characteristically) good value:

Hi I'm a new member looking to purchase a Gen 2 Cayman

Thoughts on this please..It is definately a GEN2 is it?

Why has it not sold immediately if so as it seems keenly priced plus if it goes bang or something else untoward as its a dealer there is some comeback..Doesn't seem any more expensive than current private sales are asking??

I know they have not put the reg so I cant check the MOT history

Anyway to tell if its been tracked frequently?

Many thanks

Adrian

Hey Jogger and welcome!

Yep, definitely a Gen 2 so generally fewer concerns on the unexpected big, big, big bill front.

Ashgood has a good rep and generally prices cars keenly to sell them quickly, not sure why this one hasn't gone, the red and black could be a bit divisive, but the wheels are easily changed. I would look upon that as a gift rather than a cause for concern here!

Regarding being tracked, look for wear on the outside shoulder of the tires (this is where mine wear!), but a bit of track work shouldn't be a major concern (and I would encourage you to get involved 😊). Something that has spent a lot of time at the track will likely have some suspension changes, and likely won’t have worn outer tire shoulders as a result.

Hope that helps!

I’m pretty sure that the Red Cayman at Ashgood is the same one they had last year when I started looking to buy. The car was up for £22k with 60k miles on it and it sold pretty much straight away, then about 5 weeks after it appeared again for sale with them for £23k and again sold quickly.

It looks like a nice example at that price (makes mine look a bit expensive!) Missing a few options though, it's advertised as PCM3.0 but that's not correct and has the standard radio/CD with no colour screen. Also missing heated seats and xenons although that's not likely to be important for many people. Has the important bits such as nice wheels, sports plus seats and Bose.

To help out a bit: Went and had a quick look at it. Cosmetically, it's in pretty good shape and better than I was expecting inside and out, bar the front end which is a bit chipped (but easily sorted). Exhaust system, clamps, bolts etc are pretty rusty too and could do with attention. I doubt very much it has been tracked extensively, it's just not in the right spec / configuration for that.

It has pretty long service intervals early on, which I'm not wild about, and I got the impression of a car that's been punted about a bit from owner to owner, which is never hugely reassuring but may be of no consequence. It's also not the spec I want, so just a few too many things not lining up for me - as it has no PASM, I'd need to spend about £3k on springs and dampers get it handling roughly how I want, which undermines the value proposition a bit for me personally. That said, it seemed like an OK proposition in a more general sense and not an abused car, but also not a car that had been looked after really carefully by enthusiast owners. It's middling. Not fantastic. Not poor.

Bear in mind 66k is quite high mileage in market value terms and with a few more on the clock you are over 70k which is a significant milestone, value wise. If you bought it and put, say, 15k on it, you'd be looking at resale in the high teens at best, most likely. I know some people round here think these are all cars on the brink of being worth £30k, but I don't see it. There are 80k mile cars in the classifieds up for over £20k, but they have been there for months not selling. Still, overall, it's reasonable value for money given the keen pricing and the reputation of the vendor, it's a buyable car. But not quite the steal it seems at first glance.

Reg quoted above is correct, incidentally.

As for why it hasn't sold, the market is very slow and very little is selling - as I am sure anyone around here who has one for sale can tell you. Most of the cars currently available have been on the market for ages not selling. In fact, this car not flying out the door is a very good example of just how slow the market is. It's cheaper than most private cars, miles cheaper than most dealer cars, it's from one of the better known and established specialists for these cars and having been to see it, it's in decent shape with no horrors in the history. And it still hasn't sold quickly.

One of the white cars at 911V has sold, but they do rather operate on another level to most dealers. I looked at that too. It was very good cosmetically, as you'd expect, but top money for a spec that isn't quite right for me. Very nearly bought it. But in the end, decided not to on the basis of incorrect spec for me and the fact that it's year one of production, which for reasons that won't matter to many buyers I'd rather avoid. That said, if the spec had been right, I'd have over looked that.

Oh and apropos of not much, this one that sold for £19k on CC has popped up again as a private sale for £26k. Not sure if it did truly sell on CC. It's still located in Cornwall, which is where it was before so I get the feeling that it hasn't actually changed hands. But maybe someone locally bought it and it trying to flip it.

Ashgood do Sale or Return. But it’s rare for them to do so and quite pricey. Other dealers such as Cridfords will also offer this and you will have to leave your car with them.

I’ve heard some horror stories about people losing their cars with sale or return-car is sold, company mucks the seller about a bit then goes bust-

sod that!

I don’t care what reputation a company has,I’d never do it.

heard from the seller and the sale fell through as the purchaser stumbled at the process of importing it to Australia. Can't help but think if one is going to that trouble you'd buy an R....why a modded out S?

That red one is the same car that's been for sale forever and the vendor won't agree to an inspection, sadly. Price has been cut a bit and images refreshed. Not totally convinced it's actually for sale given I offered to pay what he wanted a while back, nothing to lose allowing an inspection, he didn't even need to move the car, said I would send a specialist to wherever the car was. I'd probably pay the asking if it inspected well, but without an inspection....

Pity, because the spec is tolerable, I like the age and mileage and it hasn't been punted around a million owners. Maybe a decent trader will buy it and it will become available that way. That would suit me fine. Save me going to Penrith!

Ah i did wonder if we had seen it before.

What makes the interior only tolerable for you? can it improve that much more if at all in an S?

No issue with the interior. Spec is a bit thin bar the ext leather. For me ideal would be PASM, Bose, xenons too.

To be honest, at this point I've pretty much dropped the ext leather stipulation, it narrows the choice of cars so much. Just want low miles, really good condition and history - ultimately more important than some cow bits. With the red one I like that it's late car - 2012 build. And of course, it does have the cow, which is the most problematic spec to address post purchase.

May have made some progress on getting it inspected. Watch this space.

Yes it’s mine, I did have a sale agreed on it but unfortunately the chap can’t get the financing too complete.

I hope I'm not contravening any forum rules putting an ebay link..but is this for real?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165385575161?hash=item2681bf9af9:g:DmQAAOSwa2NiMKIB

Just looked more closely..Its a category C/D....

For anyone considering purchasing anything that has an insurance category on it this is probably a fair reflection of how much it knocks off the value?
