My air conditioning stopped working!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, only had my car just over a month so not yet overly familiar with all it's workings, anyway, I had it serviced a few weeks ago and at the same time took advantage of a air con Service and re fill. Anyway, since then & for the last month it's been icy cold with no problems but today, no cold air at all, no gradual deterioration over the last few weeks, it was fine on Wed. I've asked the garage to check it next week but any ideas in the mean time, is there any kind of fuse which could have blown etc?

Thanks

Paul

It has definitely got a relay you can change I imagine a fuse too although not certain.

when you switch it on and off can you hear the compressor coming on?

No, it doesn't appear to be switching on at all, not sure if that's good or bad news lol!

Just checked the fuse box and unless I've misread or missed it in the little fuse booklet, against the ac fuse it reads (997 Turbo only).

Specialist Porsche but not necessarily specialist ac, yes the switch light comes on but it doesn't sound like the compresser is coming on.

It's been fine for the last 5 weeks or so since I had it done.

Is this a 981? There is a known fan issue.  The fan just stops.  It's possible to get a temporary fix getting under the (front) cover and flicking the fan (it's actually very easy to do).  But if that is the issue and the car is under warranty Porsche will replace the fan with an upgraded one.  (They did on mine)

Check the belt pulley/tensioner, they pack up on the GenII cars.

Could be any number of things though that won't be fully answered on a forum (as you've probably realised), I could give you a list but the only way is to get in there and check the pulley, pressure in the system, level of gas, switches or even the compressor itself.  Best get it back in to the garage, AC systems are a pain for working on at home as most don't have the gear to do it.

Good luck!! :)

Update guys, so it's been checked and no electrical faults, there is however, zero gas in the system so a leak it is. The garage have told me the front bumper will have to come off to allow for examination, they are quoting 2.5hr labour for this. When they topped it up last month dye was added so hopefully the leak will be easy to spot under the infra red torch.

Now I am assuming worse case, it will be a radiator that needs replacing (£100?) Or if I'm lucky, a hose or coupling (few quid?)

Anybody recently had to replace anything related?

So bumper of in 2.5 hrs is about right, I've done myself on both gen1 and gen2 cars, bit more fiddly on the gen2.

Rad gone is common, and probably caused by a stone flicking up.  Hence why the Zunsport grills (club members get discount!) are so popular on these cars.

At least it's not the compressor!!

Yeah will be interesting if indeed it is a radiator condenser how much the garage quotes to replace. I've been looking on eBay and they seem to be available from anything between £50 and £100.

they should be able to give you a quote for the cost of the parts before hand, if you think you can get them cheaper then nothing stopping you providing them if they do need replacing.

I have just been looking at the zunsport grills and yes, def something to consider although will have to be after I've saved a few pennies (having new exhaust fitted next week)  as well as a/c costs!

I've watched the you tube video on there web site, do they literally just push and clip into place, no screwing or anything involved?

I guess they won't be able to quote until they have removed the bumper and ascertained what's what although I suppose I could ask them to quote in that eventuality. Are there any other components other then the condenser, pipes and couplings it could have leaked from?

Paul, is it an OPC or indy out of interest?

As for Zunsport, make the 42 minute trip to them and get them to fit the grilles for you if you can. Phone and ask for Peter, the MD, and mention the club (and discount!) and see if they'll do free fitting. He's a really good guy and it only takes a few minutes (for them!).

It's an Indy, since then however I have spoken to a local mobile ac specialist who sounds very knowledgeable and also has access to a number of local garage ramps, he's coming with his uv lamp tomorrow to see if he can identify leak area. He thinks with such a big leak in short space of time it's almost inevitable that it's a condenser.

Good idea re zunsport, they are not too far away in cannock, will maybe look into it next week as I am off.

What a week next week is going to be - Mon /Tue exhaust, Wed A/C and Thur maybe zunsport!

I better treat my other half to keep her on side!
