987 S Suspension Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Love my Cayman on a good road surface, however where i live I always have some 10 miles to go before escaping from poorly maintained country roads.

Car is a 2008 (no PASM) with 60k on the clock, running standard 18 inch wheels with Brigestone Potenza with all 4 less than 2 years and 15,000 miles old.

Am considering upgrading the suspension and have been looking at Bilstein B!2 with 40mm reduced height springs, logic being the dampers and springs are originals so probably getting tired and by lowering the car and reducing the damping it should in theory give me a better ride on poor surfaces.

Has anybody done this and what were the results like please...?

All advice gratefully received.

Steve

Have you checked the bushes first? On a car of that age they may be well beyond their best (In fact they normally require replacing at this age on a Cayman) and would leave quite a lot to be desired. Dropping 40mm I would imagine would leave a rather harsh ride, even if paired with good dampers, there's only so much movement at that much of a drop.

Hi Steve, there's several Facebook groups (UK and international) devoted to Cayman owners...worth plugging into some of these, the suspension topic comes up quite often (Americans in particular love to modify). Only comment I'd make is about being sure dropping 40mm isn't going to change the dynamic of your drive too much...it would be great on a smooth track I'm sure,  but elsewhere it might be less enjoyable.

Find yourself a good indy specialist to give you an option and costs. But as the others have said the standard control arms and bushes, strut tops are probably worn and knocking, so budget also to replace these.

Mine sits on H&R 35 mms. If you look at my profile background pic you can see the clearance. It’s got 18 inch wheels. I wouldn’t want it any lower.

Can’t speak for bilsteins etc. Mine has stock shocks and ride is very firm.
