Khaa1329
Hi Guys, Looking to purchase my first Porsche. Have found a car local to me that I like but think it's a little overvalued and wanted some opinions. Link is below. I really want the Xenon lights so my options for cars are limited. I was thinking this should be around the £10-10.5K mark. The owner has had the car for about 10 years which is good, it is a three owner car. He states that the control arms were changed by Porsche in peas pottage about 4 years or so ago. Recent work included all new AC system, new computer, ignition barrel, window mechanism (driver), steering fluid change, service, new tyres (~1000 miles done since) but no mention of the clutch but I have asked. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201909031806000 Would value your expert opinions! Thanks
Mavrik
@Khaa1329 ... Sorry but that's a fair price on first reading! ... 10-10.5k would be for a lower spec & nearer 100k miles... I think you'll be searching for a while... Just my opinion... Edited September 10, 2019 by Mavrik
Mavrik
@Khaa1329 Xenon's aren't all they're cracked up to be! ... You'll find several on here have upgraded to LED... The Xenons on my CS were woefully inadequate... Upgrading to Nighteye LED is a relatively cheap mod. The clutch on the CS doesn't last as long as on other cars (anecdotal reports) so if its on 85k miles & original clutch it'll be time to change imo... Have you gone online to get the MOT history from the .gov website to help warrant the recorded mileage? Khaa1329
Thanks, I did check the MOT history and it seemed ok. Clutch replaced at 70000 miles so that’s good. Interesting to hear about the Xenon, will take a look on the forums about the night angel LED

I'd wager that car would be up for sale on an Indi forecourt for around 13k
Khaa1329
Just thought with the current market for used car sales it was a bit high. I will take a look at the car this weekend. Do auto dim mirrors come standard on this model? Anything else I should be on the look out for? Will ask for a fresh MOT. Thanks

Thanks --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check the brake discs/pads... Also ask to have the car started from cold & check for noisy tappets & excessive smoke on start-up! If you notice ANY smoke once up to temp then walk away... Auto-dimming mirrors are an option but not as standard spec... Good luck fella 😉
GlosRich
The advert reads like the seller is a trader from home. Run it through a valuation tool like we buy any car or similar, to get an idea of the value, but they tend to have at least £2k on top for a retail sale. Also can you live with the condition of the paintwork, its swirled to hell, look at all those buffer trails on the bonnet, reflecting in the sun! Khaa1329
Taking a look this weekend. online valuation has it at £9k...
Buggyjam
Fair price - not many caymans sub 10k so not sure about that online valuation. Scan through the adds and you’ll see the market holding above where this price is, not 9k so that online value seems way off. You could offer 9k but be prepared he/she will prob just stare blankly at you ha. Edited September 11, 2019 by Buggyjam
GlosRich
There is a massive margin in the trade on Porsche's as they are more expensive to repair/parts etc. I reckon some dealers have £4k across them easily
Woodhouse
The price looks ok to me given the spec and assuming condition is ok. It's in the cheaper tax bracket so will save you £200 or so each year. It's critical that you establish the oil consumption and trend if its a private sale (and obviously you need to be confident it's the truth!). If a dealer, you might have some protection under the Sale of Goods Act against bore scoring but that will probably come down to the dealer himself covering it as many aftermarket warranties won't cover it. Personally, unless I could have a borescooe inspecton I would only buy a Gen1 987S privately from a long term owner or from a very reputable dealer. If you are ok with DIY, most other common age/mileage related issues can be sorted relatively cheaply but still expect to pay around £1k per year average (double if using a specialist). Some parts are eye watering from Porsche, such as replacement auto dimming mirror lenses at around £350 each apparently. Regarding the xenon headlights, my previous 2006 987 had these and I found them to be pretty good, certainly miles better than my 986 Boxster with the standard lights. I would not buy a car without them.
Mavrik
Online valuations like "we buy any car" etc etc are just for desperate people!!! They'll make at least 3k on top ffs!! If its not an "old shitter" on viewing, then imo 12k is reasonable... Just my opinion however... Edited September 12, 2019 by Mavrik
