andymc
Hi, wonder if you can help ...I have a cayman s 987 2007 with 66,000 miles. I have only recently brought the car. The last mot a year ago has advisory for nearside and offside inner tie rod play, so I about to change them with TRW parts. I was wondering should I also at the same time change the tie rod ends. On inspection they look ok , its not the cost as new trw tie rod ends are not expensive. Just wondering if original tie rod ends would be better quality and therefore if they are ok then refit the originals. what do you think?
Founder Beanoir™ Posted December 28, 2020 Founder Share Posted December 28, 2020 Personally, given they are pretty cheap to buy, easy to install and you will need a wheel alignment after doing the inners anyway, you might as well change both the inners and outers. Have a look at any other suspension related bits while you're in there too, at 66k miles I'd hope at least some of the suspension components have been replaced now anyway though. andymc
thanks for reply, the car had only one owner from new and full porsche service history but all looks original to me
SarlechS
TRW are the way to go, it's the same as the OEM Items you'll get form Porsche just without the Porsche Stamp. I got mine from Autodoc for a very competitve price (5 days delivery so not the quickest), i also tackled the outer track rods at the same time to tighten up the steering while on working on the rack. If you tackle it yourself its pretty simple, if you get a specialist to do it he'll charge you 2 (inner and outer £150~). As mentioned alignment is recommended although some mechanics count the treads to save the hassle, bad practise though Hope this helps and welcome! zcacogp
You'll need a removal tool to get the inner bits off but they are cheap. I think I paid £20 for mine delivered and it worked a treat.

My Cayman has just done 21K, but always good to prepare for 'stuff'...
zcacogp
The inner bits are where the tie rod screws onto the steering rack. The nuts are hard to get to and a specialist tool makes the job a lot easier. The one I bought is like this (but it seems that the price has gone up by £7): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7pc-Universal-Inner-Tie-Rod-End-Installer-Remover-Tool-Set-Adjuster-Cars-1-2-UK/283379254256?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Top tip: if you replace the standard clips on the inner gaiter with jubilee clips then you will find them much easier to do up.
