Possible HPFP on the way out?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I’ve got a 2012 meteor grey 987.2 S on about 91k miles. She’s a beauty. Recently, however, she’s been turning over 7-8 times before starting, occasionally nearly not starting at all. It’s only ever on a cold start.

There’s not much hesitation in the throttle through the revs but have noticed it once or twice. Have always felt it’s had a rough idle since I bought it but have since had it checked over at Parr and they were happy.

Firstly, has anyone else had this and do you also suspect it could be the high-pressure fuel pump? If not, then what? It is due it’s major service too but apparently it’s rare for the spark plugs to be behind this. Battery maybe?

I’ll be taking it back to Parr. But it would be great if anyone who has had to replace their HPFP could let me know what a ballpark cost should be. I.e. is two grand actually reasonable?

Cheers,

Matt

Getting the pump out and changing is apparently a pig but I can't see it being £2k with a specialist.  A fair bit of the cost is in the pump itself, however.  They are expensive parts.  I would be looking for a German manufactured replacement as they are probably the OE supplier for Porsche.  I'd take a stab at something like Bosch or Mehle.

The pump is located on the underside, if I recall.  No idea on the detailed process, but probably high pressure supply and return lines to remove, untold things on the way to get those out, then the mounting bolts and harness connection.

I think the fuel pump is accessed from the top beneath the battery tray. It doesn't look like the worst of jobs so maybe worth having a go

That's the low pressure fuel pump in the tank and is a doddle to get to.  The high pressure pump is on the engine.

Its on the back of the engine in a 911, but on the front on a boxster/Cayman. Engine out  to access it. I had a weep from mine on a car I owned. I couldn't even see it, even with the acces panel behind the seats removed. I think the part is about £150 IIRC.
