987.1 S - Lightweight flywheel

I'm contemplating a lightweight flywheel when my car next needs a clutch. I'm aware of the differing opinions re whether they can cause damage but believe there's enough out there with no issue so will likely go for it..

Has anyone got first hand experience of them and able to advise which is the best option and why + any idea of fitted cost inc clutch? Any feedback on the result before/after?

I'm in Leeds bit will travel if needed to get the job done properly..

Thanks for any info.

No first hand experience on a Cayman but I fitted a forged & lightened aluminium billet SMF & stage 1 clutch plate on my 350z GT HR with a SS clutch line.

Yes, they can be more "noisy" at idle than the standard DMF & harder to launch smoothly initially until you get used to the feel but on my Zed the motor spins up so much quicker & feels more responsive.

The clutch/fly was already changed on my CS by the previous owner at 50k miles (now on 66k)... I'd defo go for a SMF if I had to buy 😉

I asked my Porsche specialist the same question previously for my CS, the answer is that it is down to individual and what the car is used for i.e. is it tracked at all, mainly road/commute.

Steve at Statller in Sheffield said out of the last 5 fitted, 3 brought it back to replace back to OEM as they didn't like it. Hence, I didn't change.

Hope this helps

You could have a chat with Pie Performance Tuning.  They fitted one to their Cayman development car, which I bought, I've not owned it long enough or driven it enough, or really got anything to compare it to, to offer an opinion on advantages or disadvantages.  In my members car thread there is a press article on it's performance before I owned it and another in the current copy of Porsche & 911 magazine.

Mine has also been fitted with a lightened underdrive pulley.

Thanks for the responses so far. The car is just a weekend car that goes for spirited blats out so I'm not too concerned about it not hitting the mark.. I really just want to ensure I get the best flywheel/clutch combo again for the best price and fitted by someone with experience. I've heard some stories of certain brands not being that well balanced out of the box so want to avoid such problems. Will ring around to see what's what...

Cheers

Ok. First quote back looks like circa £2k fitted inc VAT for lightweight flywheel and clutch at a reputable specialist. Not sure how that sounds but bearing in mind a clutch replacement alone looks like £550 + VAT on revolution Porsche web site it seems steep to me so might just sense check a couple of others..? If a lightweight flywheel and hardware might cost £500 as parts that seems like a lot of extra labour cost for fitting the flywheel?

I’ve been contemplating an LSD also so figured I should get quote include this also as makes sense. Adding that takes the quote to £5k!

Hi. Thanks for this. I've given them a call and they seem like a good bunch. I'll research flywheel options a bit further but may well use them to carry out the work. Cheers

I had my clutch replaced last year at a local Indy, £320 for a Sachs OE spec clutch kit (friction plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing) + £550 for labour.

They also needed to replace the DMF (I just went for like for like rather than lightened), which was an additional £925 just for the part (it’s a LUK branded item, but could only source direct from OPC 🙁🙄). The labour was no extra as they were already in there doing the clutch.

So £2k for supply & fitting of OE spec clutch and non OE LFW seems a little steep - how much is a decent LFW?

No worries, hope you told them where you got the referral from?! 😀  I enjoyed the process of buying the car from them and they were very informative and enthusiastic.  Unfortunately following the purchase they have failed to answer e-mails when I have enquired about details of the car and the work carried out on it which has soured the experience slightly.

I offered to stay in touch and make the car available in the future if they wanted it to be viewed by prospective customers or press but post sale experience has suggested they aren't interested in that.

I hope to take the car to some of the events post Covid and I am planning to track the car in the next year which could have been a good showcase.

Tritonll - Thanks for info and shame they haven't responded professionally..

I will look at all options but if it's getting a clutch its getting the flywheel. To my mind the car is great out of the box. My chassis is well sorted so it's marginal gain from here on as other than a 3.7/3.9 conversion there doesn't look to be much scope for further improvement..
