Hunting for my first Porsche: A Cayman 987.2

Hi Matt. Congrats on your purchase.

I'm pushing my budget and looking at a 981 now. Going to see a racing yellow (yes yellow!) one on Thursday and currently trying to arrange to see a grey one on Wednesday. I want a PDK with the paddle shifts.

Hi Stu

What is your budget again? was it around 30K?

I recall you didn't like the R, and wasn't a fan of black? That said, PDK wise, this is worth considering, came up for sale yesterday.

https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/11822034

has the stance and power of the R, but more comfort (probably), collectable, all the bells and whilstes, Spyder rims, PDK steering wheel with the flappy paddles, the sculpture and charm of the 987 shape, from very reputable dealer.

Well worth considering!

Hi chaps. Having said I may go down the 981 route, I am still open to a 987 and this S caught my eye. What do you think? Anyone know the dealer or seen the car before?

i think it is ok, but a bit nondescript.... maybe its the photos though, but to me the wheels really let it down, it has no stance, looks like it is jacked up and a bit comical.

I prefer this one for you that came up today

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106143798762?

i thought you wanted something with more of a pop of colour than grey/

Actually, maybe that stance is the norm? Seems odd, but I guess being so used to the hunkered down R, then it looks odd on the S, but probably it is the norm. Weird how such a small difference makes a big appearance difference.

Hi. I apologise if this has been asked before, or its just a stupid one! If considering a purchase from an indie Porsche dealer should I get a PPI done? Is it irrelevant where the car is being sold from, Porsche, indie Porsche any other dealer, just MUST get one done?

Thanks, Stu.

Depends on how much trust you have in the dealer. I bought mine from Paragon without a PPI, but their cars are meticulously prepped beyond standards I’ve seen previously. The work they put into the car was fantastic so I can vouch for them. In regards to other dealers, I guess it depends on how thorough / honest they are

OK, thanks that makes perfect sense. I drive past Paragon now and again when on trips down to the coast. Nice setup there.

Thanks, Stu.

As a somewhat cautionary counter tale, I bought mine from a Porsche specialist in the Midlands which I won't name (not Zuffenhaus, I love those guys!), the car had one more owner than was advertised, did not have xenons as advertised and the 6 month warranty they gave me doesn't start until 2022 (which I'm keeping and will use if necessary haha). At best this was seriously sloppy, at worst it's just dishonest. Thankfully the car itself is mechanically very solid and has been fault free except for the AC condersors which both needed replacing. Zuffenhaus, whom I trust, have serviced the car twice since buying and haven't flagged any additional concerns.

To sum up the above, for me it depends on the specific indie you're buying from. Paragon and others have long standing reputations (that they want to keep) as purveyors of very high quality used Porsches. Based on a huge sample of 2 indies, I might also be more inclined to trust indies that are generally focused on servicing and sell a small number of cars on the side. Zuffenhaus (personnally used for servicing) and Cotswold Porsche Specialists (not used personally, but vouched for by a long term porsche owner that I trust) fit this bill.

Hey Stu…I agree on the above. If a reputable garage like Paragon, Cridfords or Ashgood then I wouldn’t have got a PPI. Anything else yes. That includes sports car indys for me, as the ones I had interactions with were fine but salesmen none the less and not pure specialists. There is one that comes up regularly on AT called Mortimers that I feel is absurdly overpriced. And the guys there were chatty but ultimately didnt take me seriously.

The PPI is a bible for what you need to budget for too. It saved me a grand privately and also picked up things the owner didn’t even know about. And things I think he did but….’forgot’ to mention, shall we say.

Would a grey 3.4 S manual at 60k miles interest you? It was another private sale I found and opted not to go for on the basis of spec and the fact the guy was a bit unresponsive. But to be fair I never went to view it and investigate. Let me know and could put you in touch.

Hi both. Thanks for your comments and great advice. Funnily enough Matt, I was going to visit the dealer you mention as they have a grey 2.9 gen 2. Not sure now lol - but I spoae should go and see it and see how it goes with them.

I think I would feel more confident buying from the likes of Paragon, Ashgood, etc.

I will keep you up to date on my progress.

Are you enjoying your Cayman Matt, pleased with it? Early days I know but made any changes/upgrades?

Cheers,

Stu.

Hey Stu, by all means check them out…just my personal experience. Just think they are out to cash in on the pandemic and I was shocked at a few of the 2.9s they put up for £26/27k!! Considering I got mine for £21k and it’s a 3.4 S…mileage granted…but I would hold out

for a 3.4 if you’re still into the 987s. They also don’t do test drives there. If you want to test drive a 2.9, go see Mole Valley…the owner was really friendly and had a white 2.9 with 26k miles on it that felt nice and tight.

I’m generally happy with mine but am a bit frustrated with the paintwork

at the mo, which the PPI missed and the owner neglected to mention. Obv lots of stone chips but a fair few scuffs and scratches through the paint, it just doesn’t seem like he really looked after the paint. The suspension also feels a little looser than a lower mileage car as you’d expect so I think that may be on my list soon. Top jobs to come up mechanically are coolant pipes and geometry, maybe brake lines first.

For upgrades, done nothing yet but I think I’m gonna start with:

1. Paint correction

2. Alloy refurb and spray black. Re-chrome wheel nuts

3. Decals and black side vents

4. Detail it and ceramic coat maybe

5. Possibly grind back and relaquer the headlights?
6. Carnewal? :)

Questions for the forum:

1. The prev owner used a disgusting air freshener that is now stuck in the interior. What’s the best remedy?
2. I’m a bit worried about a rough idle….every five seconds or so the engine kinda rumbles and shakes the car and the Rev pointer also moves up and down ever so slightly. Please tell me this is normal. I’ve seen suggestions that it is or that it could be coil packs or clutch, though it has a new clutch from 50k miles.

3. Clip on the near side wing mirror panel with control switch is broken and panel comes away from the door. Easy to replace?

Cheers

Hi Matt. Thanks for the advice. Agree on the prices being asked there. They have just put up an Aqua Blue 2.9 which is THE colour for me so I need to see that one too. Im surprised at the no test drives, really?

You have a lot to keep you busy there with yours.

Cant wait to have my own 'to do' list!

Thanks again everyone for answering all my questions.

whilst there also check this one they have

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106183965683

Not your ideal colour but spec wise it is fully loaded compared to the blue one. But the blue is nice!

as the blue doesn’t have the full leather you’ll be able to instantly jump in between the two to see how much of a difference it makes to the cabin for you. Might not make any odds, but I think you will notice the next level ambience it gives

That's doesn't sound right I'm afraid. Coil packs are usually a bit more obvious in my experience. Try unplugging the MAF and see if that improves things. If so, the MAF is dying

Hmmmm…nothing in the PPI about it either. What is the MAF?
