Newbie with various questions

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys I'm just getting to grips with my 2007Caman S in Guards Red. Reg  E18CAY So far i'm really pleased with it. I had a 944 Turbo SE for 12 years so I know a little about the pitfalls of Porsche ownership.. I hope!

Couple of questions

1) How long should the car be able to sit without running before the battery is too flat to start it?

2) The 'blind or curtain' at the back luggage space is missing. Are they a nuisance or worth having and where would I get one? OPC only? How Much/

3) The PCM 2.1 is really clunky. I have Bose speakers but music is not my thing.... I'd just a soon listen to the exhaust!.. Given that I need to upgrade the phone and Sat Nav. I've bought a cheap Bluetooth device that works after a fashion and I have a separate Tom Tom.

replacing the head unit with suitable upgrades seems to be £1000 + exercise. any other ideas which will not entail trailing wires?

Thanks Eddie

Hi Eddie and welcome,

I'm on boxa.net also. I live in Churchdown, Gloucester, but I drive through Tewkesbury on the way to my Mums in Pershore, so might see you about.

1. Depends on the battery health. Also do you know the remote locking turns off after 7 days to save power, so you have to use the key to re-arm it. I've got a Ctek battery conditioner on mine when its not in use, Aldi also sometimes sell them for less than £20.

2. The luggage cover seems to be at least £100 used, here is the part number for you to Google 987 555 341 00. Not sure I'd bother, use the frunk if you need to hide stuff.

3. Not sure about the head unit, but someone else will give some advise on that. The radio is fine for me, too busy listening to the engine!

Cheers

Agree with Rich on the points above.  I had a 350z previously and that would drain the battery in about 5 days if not turned over.  I've left the Cayman well over a week without any issue.  I think the power save mode must help.

In regards to the head unit - my car came fitted with a Parrot BT kit - https://www.halfords.com/technology/bluetooth-car-kits/bluetooth-car-kits/parrot-mki9200-bluetooth-handsfree-kit-v3

I wasn't sure of it at first, however the more I use it, the more I like it.   It never has an issue pairing with my phone and the music and call quality over BT is pretty decent IMO.  I use my phone as a sat nav so the directions boom out of the speakers.  And you get to keep the OEM look of the original head unit.  If you like that sort of thing!

I've left mine for almost 3 weeks in the summer without charging and it still starts, albeit a bit slow to turn over.

The Parrots are good, you can also get a Pure kit that does BT and DAB radio.

'Here hear' to that Rich ! ? 🤣

A warm welcome aboard Eddie.......

Mine starts fine after week (Not had it long)....but have no experience in the cold winter. I do have a C-Tek charger bolted to the wall and a harness wired in to the car ready though. A very popular trickle charger these days.

GlosRich, not sure how you get to Pershore, i'm in Kinsham which is just south of Bredon on East side of M5. If you go via the army base at Ashchurch I'm only 100 yds off your route.

Thanks for your input, no doubt other questions/issues will follow.

Re the battery it only lasted about a week but I'm not sure how charged up it was as the cars been on SORN for 6 months.

The rear hatch remote doesn't work now but it did last week? Duff solenoid or something

What is the function of the battery/front hatch sign in the drivers foot well. Does that take a cover off if I pull it.... doesn't seem very obvious?

Welcome onboard. The battery sign in the drivers foot well. If you open the cover you will find a link that can be connected to in the event you have a totally flat battery. In this situation you will not be able to open the front bonnet to get to the battery, its electrically operated. I carry a small jumper pack in one of the storage compartments either side of the engine. So if I do get a flat I can then use jumper pack to open bonnet and then jump car or charge battery.

There is manual cable in the wheel arch but it meant to be a pain to get to.

I know Kinsham, driven through many a time, try not to speed!

Do you know Lee at Cotswold Porsche in Toddington?

Good place to live, halfway between Lee and the OPC in Tewkesbury!

Hi, like Rich I can add the guys at Cotswold Porsche seems genuine and helpful, just had my clutch and flywheel done , ouch but seems to drive lovely now, as per head units I’ve fitted a Sony Apple CarPlay unit at Halford’s and fair play they did a great job , and looks pretty OEM but now is Bluetooth and can use google maps and Waze for  SAT Nav etc   ,welcome to the club

HI Hutch, I 've just had the A/C  done on my Gen 1 car at Cotswold Porsche... Toddington?  I missed that issue when I bought the car and am kicking myself for it as it was a pitfall I was aware of!  I may be needing a new battery , not sure yet as the car has not been far since I got it. I'll maybe get it checked out at Halfords. I also asked them about Head replacement and they are significantly less costly than other who clearly specialise in that sort of thing. Which halfords?  My issue is not the quality of the music but lack of Bluetooth and Sat Nav. DAB radio would be good. The Halfords guy reckons the FO link to my Bose speakers costs £150!  need to think about it
