This advert still cracks me up.  I sold my midnight blue with black interior (not grey) and NO rear wiper and 50k miles for £13,500 a year ago.  I needed to offer a free stay on 5 star hotel obviously...

£27k for any Gen 2 S is a tough sell now. They are on another planet when it comes to pricing.

But it's a Gen 1 S ...so mental!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've still not found 'the one'... been a busy few weeks and still justifying my mid life crisis purchase to myself.. 😉

Even rethinking Gen1 vs Gen2 as spending £15-18K on a GEN1 sits better in my own mind but weighs this against slightly increased risk, TCO...  Then Gen 2 engine has less issues (overall), likely to be newer etc..  i'm worried about making a mistake as this is a significant cash dump for me..  and follow up bills not going to make me more popular.

(Yes - I'm faffing.)

So

1) Would you expect 2nd hand market to drop in price in 3-6months when new cars become more available - would you wait?

2) Presume a Gen2; what are the top things you would look for in a 2009-2012 model, to reduce your risk of issues/high cost going forward.   most around this age seem to be 45K-80K on the clock if that helps.

thanks in advance for the knowledge and experience.

I would not expect it to drop this year, nor next year. Perhaps flatlining but not a drop. It will take years, if ever, for hundreds of thousands of people that have paid over the odds (comparatively to pre-covid prices) to just accept 'thems the breaks', and for the market to correct itself. And what is 'correct'? ...as discussed on this thread (or another), the price of used Porsches in the UK are significantly cheaper than in mainland Europe and many other countries further afar......so one could say the prices now are what they should have been all along.

That you quiz about 3-6 months means you are willing to wait ample time, and I would recommend you use that time to simply focus on waiting for the right car to come up rather than monitor if what direction prices are going.

3-6 years maybe some relative adjustment.

3-6 months, no way...but thats not to say a deal can't be done. Best advice I can give is wait it out, have the money ready, and be ready to pounce as behind you are another dozen buyers looking for the same. Deposit down straight away, don't dilly around with the 'I need to see it first', get the deposit down then worry about logistics. Good ones sell within the day....the reason? they are the good one's. Simples.

It took me 2 years to wait for my ideal spec to come up, and you'll thank yourself in the long run.

Re point 2, others here are far more knowledgable than I on how these things work.

A good guide here on what to look out for

1. Yes, a little. There was less demand last winter and prices were lower. Cars with big tickets aren't selling that quickly and sellers are having to lower their prices accordingly. This is entirely subjective so I'll add a big IMO on this.

2. Look for a car that has had as many of the following done recently as possible; brakes, coolant pipes, brake pipes, air con re-gas, tyres, clutch/flywheel, major service with specialist.

Like Julian says, you got to be ready to pounce.

some really nice mods

Be interesting to see how much higher that goes. Although there isn't the history detail, I think that's already at about what I would value it at. You've really got to find a like-minded soul to get a good price on a modded example.

Interesting..

Where there are a lot of mods looks like a lot of money spent on it in which case why spend the money just to sell it?

Should I be cautious of modded Porsches? Not sure I could tell if the mods have done well too, I’m not a mechanic..

Well that depends on how long the seller has owned it for, could be that it was a stock car and they have done everything they wanted to do, have enjoyed it and it is time for their next project.

In a similar way, I enjoy spending money on my cars and lightly modding/upgrading them and I often move them on having not really having had them for that long. For some people that is how they like to spend their money and not expect it all back at sale time, nor should they, it is the cost of their hobby.

If ever you are not sure on a modded car, contact the seller and have some decent questions to hand, you'll soon get a feel for the seller in how they talk about it, if they are just flipping the car then you likely won't get much from them.

If it was me, I wouldn't have started with a base model to try and get the R vibe which is what he appears to be shooting for.

What's that rear fin mounting all about ...it just smacks of him not being able to afford the aero kit (which is understandable as it's silly money)

Or perhaps that is exactly what he wanted to go with, great thing about cars is that everyone can mod to their own tastes and budgets.

Often it isn't buying the best spec out there, it is seeing what you can do to a 'lesser' car to make it the best it can be and enjoy doing so.

It'll be interesting where that one ends up. If it fetches a grand or two on top of the current £20k then it'll make @Rockers modded Silver S that sold recently for circa £25k a nice buy indeed.

insightful comments - I'm used to expecting sellers to hide stuff when selling cars, as often there are issues they want to cover up..  not something i could ever do, my cars always have been looked after as I don't want any comeback and its just a sh1tty thing to do for people's hard earned cash...

But those were cheaper cars, so this view of making the car the best you can is very refreshing.. thanks all.

So:

What red flags would stop you buying one - what has made you walk away previously from a Cayman?

no offence but I think it would be hard to find a more blander version. Let me flip the question back to you to get more insight into what you are after, so we can help, why has that one caught your eye?

Good question.

FSH, (Colour, the alloys, overall looks)/Price.

Lower mileage a plus, extended leather a plus (not essential).

Chrono / SatNav are a bonus but not essential..  would like heated seats but not a deal breaker.

PASM is not essential.

So I guess I'm not overly fussy on spec more reliability, FSH, service history details.

What do you think this is missing - what would be essential for you?
