anon_uk
Hi guys, I have been waiting for a few months with this part on order, and it finally came. Can anybody confirm this is actually a master cylinder for a GT2? I may be wrong but I didn't think Lucas manufactured any of them, and it has a stamp saying 1973 on it... although could be a coincidence. Cheers
anon_uk
Has anybody actually fitted the GT3 brake master cylinder in to an '07 CS? as the link below seems to indicate that it is not a simple swap? https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=230&t=1554739
Mavrik
I've got exactly the same GT3 master but haven't got around to fitting it at the moment... Easy to fit the actual master but bleeding the system inc the clutch is supposed to be a ball ache! I got mine on eBay from a guy that had bought a big list of stuff for his track car from Garage Midnight but sold the car before fitting... Got it for a good price too 😉 From the research I've done it's a straight swap. Lucas was taken over by TRW Automotive in 1999 fella... They supply these to Porsche... https://www.garagemidnight.com/ Edited November 20, 2018 by Mavrik
Mavrik
I believe mine was originally purchased from rockauto.com (US import) & sold by Garage Midnight...
Aaron
The master cylinder is made by TRW - PMN166 is the part number. It was £205 on Amazon when I bought mine. Don't buy it from Porsche because you end up with the same part but it comes in a Porsche box. As for installation: it's a straight swap. You take your old one out and put the new one in. I did the swap in about 10 minutes and then it's about 2 hours to bleed the system. You need to bleed the brakes twice; which is where the time consumption comes in. You bleed once to get the air from the lines, then you need to drive and activate the ABS a few times (to remove air upstream of the ABS pump) and then bleed them again. If you have access to PIWIS or Durametric Pro, you can activate the ABS pump and it will bleed the brakes for you. No need to bleed twice or pump the pedal manually. I use a vacuum pump to bleed, personally, but there's a million methods out there. Buy new caliper bleed nipples and replace them whilst you're there. You'll thank me later. Edit: also, the TRW manual states to not bench bleed the master or operate the plunger without fluid present. Don't do it! Mavrik
@Aaron Cheers for the heads up re NOT bench bleeding & the ABS 😉 Why new bleed nipples? Mine were fine a few months back when I did a fluid flush/refill? I'll be doing the old fashioned bleed with a one way valve tube & pedal pumping lol... Tbh the reason I haven't bothered to fit mine yet is that I haven't got a garage & I heard that the bleed process is a ball ache! ... Guess I need to just get off my arse lol... Having recently uprated all my lines I can confirm the bleed process is time-consuming. Its a slowly slowy, catchy, monkey task, and a pain in the arse!
anon_uk
Thanks for all of the replies guys. Great to know, Porsche specialist will fit for me so he has PIWIS. It was only that one thread on Piston Heads that made me 2nd guess how easy it is to fit, so glad that is cleared up. I ordered from germany 141 Euros + 16 p&p (no import tax) https://www.fvd.net/de-en/99735591031/brake-master-cylinder-27mm-997c4s-tt-gt2-gt3-gt3rs-07-997gts4-12.html @Aaron I have ordered a set of Brembo nipples as you suggested, do the old ones corrode or something? Thanks
Mavrik
Looks like I didn't get much of a bargain then!?! 😩 I paid £250 for mine!! Also got the original sales receipt from Garage Midnight who supplied it for near £400 with VAT 😵

Cheers It looks a bit ‘battered’ when you zoom into the images - is that how it’s been delivered to you? Is it brand new, or taken from an existing car (ie salvaged part)? at €140 inc VAT it seems like a bargain, but I’m wondering about it’s quality / history if its arrived looking like that... 🤔

There doesn't appear to be any previous damage, yes some cosmetic maybe. If it was salavage i would expect signs ware and dirt, I assume new old stock. They offer 14 day money back guarantee and 12 month warranty.
Aaron
The exterior can be battered to bits, as long as the plunger, reservoir seals and brake line threads are intact then I'm sure it'll work (provided everything lines up/fits). I'm not aware of Lucas manufacturing the GT3 master cylinder but that isn't to say that this won't work just the same. It certainly looks right, but it's hard to say for sure without seeing it in the flesh. There are part number differences, however: Your PN: 99735591031 The GT3 PN: 99735591030 It's either denoting the different manufacturer or it's a completely different part. I would give it a go, but I wouldn't be surprised if something doesn't quite fit. I would be playing close attention to the vacuum booster sealing onto the plunger cylinder and that the MC push rod mates the pedal's push rod perfectly. This is one of those things that you really don't want to go wrong... If you have a professional fitting it then I'm sure they can make the right call. 8 hours ago, anon_uk said: It sounds like you got original Porsche boxed part though, so you still got a bargin It's still a lot of money for a box. I never realised they had become so scarce in stock and inflated. And to think I was a little mad for not buying one when they were £190. I feel much better now (18 months later). anon_uk
I'm very pleased to say that the master cylinder is all fitted now along with S/S brake lines... and the brakes feel great, like they should of felt in the first place if Porsche had done it right. Very pleased, and a good mod to do. The specialist said everything went straight in, and all ok. The part number difference was that Lucas made prior to TRW.

Windymiller
I really want to try a 987 Caymans brakes with the ‘GT3’ master cylinder fitted, before I take the plunge myself. Anyone going to be at Oulton Park 8th March or Anglesey 18th may track days next year and willing to let me have a drive (even just in the car park)?
