Popular Post sevenfourate
Another day in Cayman ownership...... Lower door decals fitted this morning; along with the rear arch stone guard that the dealership originally messed up fitting - and Porsche messed up delivering it's replacement.....with any urgency: Then: New Air - oil separator fitted this afternoon. Not exciting enough to photo. But the warm feeling inside knowing it's another thing 'done' is real 😊 Then exhaust tips were swapped out. These are fully Stainless [No chrome plated ends like the ones on the car - and were labelled as 'Porsche Eurocup. A little longer female-fitting end to tip [So i have got a little 'poke'], a very slight slash-cut to the ends....and perhaps a tad 'upswept'. I like them a lot ! Dad hunting for the new tips at the wrong end 🤣 And a side view to show the slight 'poke' to the rear, and also the slight upsweeeping (Is that even close to being a genuine Queens English word ?) of the new tips: And the eagle eyed amongst you might have noticed the large Matt silver (?) rear Cayman badge has gone - replaced by a more sublety sized Matt Black item. Looks tiny in this pic....a better perspective is given from the picture with my Father in it; 2 above: Some paintwork next. I'm on the case trying to find the right place...... Thanks for looking !

Thanks for the compliments Spykee. It is a tidy one. But 'very tidy' still isn't quite my aim....😎 Well; what on first impressions looked like 4 immaculate condition wheels wasn't quite true. And one has some bubbling near the valve. And another has some bubbling; and actually a minute spot where the lacquer has cracked / broken away on the inside of a spoke. So all 4 are being powder-coated later this week; and i've purchased 4 new centre-caps. So that will be 'another area done' and that shouldn't need to be returned to in quite some time. THEN we move onto a bit of paintwork....... Edited August 12, 2019 by sevenfourate
sevenfourate
This is the stuff that really gets on my wick. Re-visiting stuff you shouldn't have to and have paid good money and committed time to doing properly once already. For whatever 'poor' reason....... I went to adjust my new exhaust tips Sunday..........as they didn't look to be sitting quite square to my uber-critical eye. I started to undo the clamp (Built in / weld lugs onto the side of the collar of my new tips; with a bolt passing between the two lugs to apply the clamping force); It's a crude, shocking affair and as the clamps tighten and the two lugs aren't now exactly parallel to each other - the bolt is almost forced to not run square in the captive / welded nut....and of course being a stainless bolt - it then eventually binds up; jammed tight. Stunning 😞 You could also possibly (?) argue that a bit of suitable lubrication from my mechanic upon install in the threads / captive nut may have helped and certainly wouldn't have hindered......(Thoughts ????) Meanwhile i took the tips in to work today; chopped through the jammed bolt, extremely carefully cut away the majority of the lug, meticulously sanded down the remainder and then refinished / polished the collar. I then fitted a much better solution to the whole clamp / clamping issue. By way of a very heavy duty Stainless Steel T-bolt hose clamp. This gets rid of the notion of lug faces not running parallel to each other, is a wide product to provide a good clamping footprint around the collar; and the design produces equal force all the way around / pulls it together evenly. Job done.....not to be revisited again 😲 😂
sevenfourate
Busy week. Busy weekend ! Car went in for re-powdercoating of the wheels Thursday due to 2 scabby patches where the lacquer had been broken (By a stone ?). My trusted mechanic (And Porsche fan / owner amongst his vast collection of exotica) of 30+ years kindly took them off.....and let my car sit up inside; and out of the way on a set of his ramps while the wheels were being done locally. I took this opportunity to get into his workshop and paint the brake hubs in Hammerite smooth (Silver) while i could easily get to the hubs. And as planned: Friday the wheels came back from the powdercoaters and went back on the car again. The shade of silver i chose in tring to replicate the stock colour / match up to the new wheel cap centres as much as i could; was funnily enough called "Standard Silver". My coater then told me after i had chosen - that he's done 'many' Porsches the very same shade on the owners request. I took the opportunity to have a fresh set of N1 rated Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres fitted while we were there; and also jammed a new set of centre caps on for good measure. Another 'area' that's now 100% sorted and won't need re-visiting for quite some time - fingers crossed. I also had my paint guy order up some colour swatches / chips last week in lieu of the bonnet being re-painted to eradicate some stone chips in the near future. These came in to him yesterday and there was a choice of 2 slightly different variants from 2 different paint manufacturers. Mine matched up to the dead stock (Not courser) variant; and we'll be ordering some paint now; doing a colour wash test and proceeding accordingly if all looks swell........ Other than that - the first; and a pretty mammoth outside clean and detail today 😎 Edited August 18, 2019 by sevenfourate
sevenfourate
***And embarrassingly i've just had this topic title changed for me - after the car was advertised and sold to me as Seal Grey. But upon recently looking for paint codes in order to buy / match some paint; it actually turns out to be Meteor Grey..........😏
GlosRich
Lovely job, looking great. When you pant the bonnet, have you considered getting it clear wrapped PPF, to stop anymore chips? Mine needs painting, and I was considering wrapping after, or its going to be constantly getting chipped. Also recommend some Zunsport grilles in the front to stop the stones and debris hitting the air con rads, and filling up with leaves.

Yes i'm 'just about' really happy with it now. The driving has always been great; and with some mechanical maintenance done along with new brakes that have now bedded in and fresh rubber - that side of things has only gotten better. And was primary IMO. Its just a case of me trying to cosmetically erase some of the evidence of 12 years of use now - within reason - that is stopping me being exceptionally and over the moon happy overall. Very nearly there now though to be fair. I see your point with the PPF. But a bonnet spray isn't hugely expensive - and i'm guessing that a PPF application isn't cheap (Have you had any quotes ?). The car is also only ever going to be a 2-3k a year summer only toy; and won't ever see any motorway miles for sure. So i'm hoping to not get stone chips - to anything like the same degree as its previously suffered at some point. Oh i hear you on the Zunsports. And for protection it's unquestionable. I just hate (Strong emotion) the looks. I may have to ponder some more. Are you a user ? Cheers.
Ben
I think you must have one of the most pampered Porsche's on the planet - good stuff! I've just posted my thoughts on the Zunsports in another thread having fitted them this weekend - personally I really like the look, but as I mentioned I think black grills on a non-dark coloured car may need some 'adjustment' to achieve the perfect result. But anything that can help reduce the amount of crud that ends up on the condensers has got to be a good thing!

Most pampered Porsche on the Planet award: possibly.......along with vying for the emptiest current account on the forum 🤣 It's of course partly the 'new car effect'. And partly because i see no Grey as far as (Especially 'play') vehicles are concerned. They are either done 200% right. Or they are wrong. Please link me to your thoughts on the Zunsports Ben ? GlosRich
I think the Zunsports look Ok, especially in black, worth if for all the rubbish they will stop getting into the bumper. However I'm on a 'cooling off' period from spending on my car, Got it in Feb, spent about £1k on it, service, and various things fixed, so not spending anymore this year, as it just gets out of control. I believe you actually need to live with a car for a bit, see if its good, before spending loads on it. See your point about the PPF, looks like it might be getting on for £1k, for a full front end film, which is too much.

Maybe for the best that i consider fitting some - even if the looks aren't 100% up my street. Thanks for your thoughts..... I hear you on the spending; and getting carried away. I hadn't actually tallied up mine so far - but for what most would have taken as a very good example, i've somehow 'squandered' [That would be the wife's word for sure - not mine. I prefer the term 'invested' 🤣] quite a bit of savings so far. £178 Rear Brakes and pads £40 Brake Fluid £67 Air Oil separator £250 Exhaust tips and clamp £250 fitting for all the above £250 wheel powder-coating £600 Tyres, centre caps and bolt covers £100 Anon bits and pieces £65 Lower door decals £60 Fitting the above £170 Machine Polish Total £2030.00 in the first month - with bonnet respray still to come in quick order. Gulp. That should be me really happy and the car really sorted for quite some time though hopefully. And just WOW on PPF price. That's incredible. I knew it wouldn't be 'pennies'. But that's something else !
Hutch259
Hi Guys, I’ve had an expensive month as well, 4 new pilot sports last week and today a visit to Lee at Cotswold Porsche for a new clutch and flywheel, hopefully this is it for a while otherwise SWMBO might think me having a mistress would be cheaper. A quick thank you to the guys at Cotswold Porsche specialist, unfortunately my first time visit was expensive but they were friendly and gave great advice, would certainly recommend . At least the car now holds the car lovely and changes gear like it should do, time for some driving me thinks
Hutch259
Sorry guys meant to add I think that if you have new paint, you need to wait a while before added PPF otherwise it becomes an issue on removing, ie removing the paint when removing it. Mines a daily so unfortunately keeps getting chips so a repaint at some point would be best or have it wrapped as it self heals
GlosRich
Yep these cars eat money. You start to get to the point where you could be financing something newer and better for less. A new one on a PCP is £400 monthly with a good deposit.
Daz
If your not sure about the look of the Zunsport grills you could go DIY and make grills that sit behind the original. A couple of us have gone DIY. I made my current set and fitted through the original grills. I plan at some point to take front bumper of and retemplate and remake. I like the current look but not completely happy with fit. Apparently getting front bumper off is not a difficult job. I just haven't been brave enough yet. Here is a picture plus the parts I used.

Now there’s an idea Daz ! Well done that man. Much-much nicer look. For me it’s the whole prominence of the Zunsports that spoils the look; being ‘in-front’ and in plain view. But being behind the grill slats is a different prospect altogether..... What do you hope / expect to gain by removing the bumper and having better access to do as you want ? Are you aiming for a more secure / ‘better looking’ fix (literally) eradicating the tie wraps in view ?
GlosRich
Does look better and a lot cheaper than Zunsports. If you take the bumper off you could do an even more discreet install, and clear out all the existing crap in the process...
Daz
If I take bumper of I can template and cut a more accurate shape and maybe secure with no cable ties.
