987 Gen 2 Prospect

@Shuey Chow there’s a link here on the cayman TV section for changing the steering wheel. I followed it when I swapped my ‘grey’ plastic wheel for the metal 3-spoke sports design one last year. Took about 30mins all in including battery -ve terminal removal and refit.
https://www.caymanoc.com/cayman-tv/

And i pay ~£29 pcm on tax by DVLA direct debit on a 2010 3.4S.

Gen 1 cars registered before 23rd March 2006 are cheaper to tax than cars registered after that because the government changed the tax rates on that date.  All gen 1 987 S and 2.7 cars with 6 speed gearboxes (and maybe Tiptronics?) After that date are about £200 per year more expensive to tax, currently around £550.  As far as I know (happy to be corrected) all 987 gen 2 cars are in the same tax bracket as the early gen 1s.

That's what I thought until I read the Parkers link. It could be a mistake on their end.

Sounds about right from my small amount of looking into this pre-purchase.

I read that because final drive is the same or similar in 5 and 6 speed cars; and the lower gears are then lower ratio's - like for like - in the 6 speed; and the fact the test is done at a certain speed in a certain gear.......the 6 speed is therefore revving more during the test and in terms of a Gen1 - just misses out on the lower tax band........

Gen2 cars have the lighter DFi engine with lower emissions, which is why they're cheaper to tax then Gen1 cars (registered after 23/03/2006).

A new consideration that I would value your opinions on...… if I purchased a secondhand car from an opc centre it would come with an opc warranty.  I woul probably be paying top prices for what should be top condition used car (compared to others in the market place) and it would come with one of the best warranties available.  But the warranty would mean no modification or deviation from original and requirement for OE parts for any repairs.

So warranty (peace of mind) for anything non wear parts or cosmetic versus lesser or no warranty but can choose how to spend my money on repairs, maintenance and modification?

More lockdown dilemmas...….. :10_wink:

Have a look on the OPC website, but I believe they come with a 2 year warranty, which is considerable peace of mind.

Obviously some dealers are better than other in how well they prep the cars.

As per Glos Rich - if you buy from a reputable Indy it should come with a decent ‘extended’ warranty (ie 6+ months).

even under the consumer rights act 2015 specifically applied to used vehicles all cars purchased from a recognised dealer come with a ‘guarantee’ of 6 months.
ie if you buy a used car from a used car dealer and it breaks they should fix it at their cost. I don’t think many people know this, irrespective of whether you bought a 6 month warranty through them or not.

really you buying a 6month 3rd party warranty is an ‘insurance policy’ for the supplying dealer - not protection for you.... 🤨

see link, scroll down to ‘my rights after 30 days’.

or buy privately from a known considerate owner, get an independent check done, and after 90days go to an OPC and pay ~£1320 for their 111point inspection and 2 year warranty. But NB - for their warranty to apply you will need to perform any works they pick up on their 111point inspection.

Thanks for the replies @GlosRich, @Windymiller, all useful information and thoughts.  I also found the forum on 911virgin which has a wealth of information on dealer reviews, both indie and opc as well as feedback and experiences with warranties from both.  Really good resource.

Homing in on a potential target...………. :27_sunglasses:

Has anyone any experience of purchasing from OPC in terms of price negotiation?  I appreciate that we are in a unique climate in terms of car sales but aside from that, have people found that on the lower priced used cars at OPC, is there any room to negotiate on selling price, or maybe on extras if retrofit options are requested?  Or is it as I suspect pretty much the price is the price, as they are confident if you don't make a purchase someone else will be along soon that will?

Many thanks,

Pretty much no negotiating on price.

You’ve gotta think they’ve put a ~£1k warranty on it and done any bodywork to return to ‘Porsche showroom standard’ (however good you believe that is / isn’t).

but I would suggest you haggle on things like getting a PCM firmware update and latest maps. It’s minimal cost to them as mainly labour, which is largely, ‘insert cd, press ‘load’, come back 2 hours later, swap cd, do again...’ 🤨

also try for:

car mats

New tyres (though they always supply with >3mm)

aircon / brake fluid / G’box / oil change if not been fully serviced recently (They perform any servicing due within 3 months of sale)

ceramic coat application

things that are of value to you, but minimal cost to them 🤔

🤷‍♂️

Thank @Windymiller, that follows my own expectation.  The PCM update was quoted at £313 so maybe achievable and it makes sense to try for some of the fluid changes for peace of mind.

Hoping to test drive next week so I am edging closer.  Viewed another of my contenders yesterday but that has now been ruled out.

Many thanks,

Yes, I tried to purchase an OPC car before I bought my current one. I went in very hard on the price, it was up for £32k and I said I'd give them £28k. I think they were a little shocked, while in the showroom they then came back at £30k. I politely told them it was £28k or no deal, they wouldn't budge any further. I finished my coffee and said, okay no problem, my offer still stands give me a call if you want to do a deal and walked out. I had been in the car 30 mins when the phone rang £29K. I still said no, £28k with 2 years OPC warranty. They came back a week later ands said £28k but only one year warranty. I still said no, two years warranty. 4 months later the car was still on their forecourt at £28k! 🤣

As with most car sellers (esp franchised dealers), they have monthly, quarterly, annual targets to meet that earn them group/brand bonuses. So if you catch them right you might be able to negotiate some £xk off a screen price if its worth £xxk to the dealership In a group/brand bonus.

Just depends if you catch them on the right day / week / month in a period.

as they’ve all been closed down and selling nowt for ~2months you might have a buyers advantage 🤔😉👍🏻

I've been a bit quiet on this quest over the last couple of weeks but am pleased to have some positive news as yesterday I agreed the purchase of my Cayman and hope to be able to collect it next week!! :1_grinning:

I have looked at a number of prospective cars and came very close to pulling the trigger on an 'as close to perfect condition' a car as I could find at an OPC with the valued warranty, almost perfect and of course with the accompanying price tag.  But when I drove it, whilst everything was exactly as it should be and it was an impressive ride I just came back without the grin on my face that I was expecting, I just wasn't as blown away as I had expected and wanted to be.  After reflection I just felt that I couldn't part with that kind of cash for a car that just didn't really excite me, so I walked away and took some time to re-evaluate.

I almost gave up the idea of buying one altogether, despite having already purchased in readiness a car cover, trickle charger, cleaning materials and joining the de-snork group buy!!

But then, again with inspiration from the forums including members on here, thank you, I changed my direction.  I decided to spend less, look for a car that wasn't necessarily perfect and that I would use more, in any kind of weather without worrying so much about the precious bodywork, be able to modify if I wanted, unrestricted by warranties (de-snork for one!!) and one that maybe when the time was right consider taking on the track.

So my search started again but with a different budget and different criteria.  Searching brought to my attention a car that had been on the market, with a Porsche indie specialist, right from the beginning of early thoughts of buying a car, it had always attracted my attention but previously didn't match what I was looking for, now however it did!  It was professionally modified already with considered enhancements, suspension, quickshift, lightened flywheel, throttle body, wheels and remap, and it looked good (in my eyes), purposeful but not overly in your face.  So I made an offer which was accepted and yesterday I travelled some distance to view the car.  It was even better in the flesh than I had hoped, stunning in midnight blue and the drive was fantastic, this time I certainly had the grin factor.

So there you have it, deposit paid, things to do like arranging insurance (could be interesting!), the dealer has to MOT and service it and hopefully one day next week I can collect my first ever Porsche!  Once in my possession I will take some pics and start a thread in members cars so that you can all see what I ended up with!! I will also share my experience with the dealer which has been very positive, their approach has been friendly, patient, accommodating, non pushy and from a business that specialise in nothing but Porsche and just radiate expertise, professionalism, passion and enthusiasm for the cars they work with and for customer service.

I would like to thank all of those who contribute to this forum, I have learned so much and been inspired by your shared experiences, without which I probably wouldn't have ended up fulfilling that life long dream of owning a Porsche.  Let the journey with both the good times and the bad times begin...……….   :577452c0a37b0_smiley-emoticon-1961-carbrands-porsche:

Just HUGE CONGRATS !

This is great news - so glad you’ve found ‘the one’, and sounds like all the ‘must have mods’ you’d want already.

it is funny how different ones of the ‘same’ car do / don’t hit that emotional chord for us. I had the exact same with the ‘push-button’ PDK version of the car I did get. It just left me cold, whereas my one just connected with me, and I with it.

I think it goes some way to ‘proving’ that cars like these do have a soul or character, and just like with people, some you click with, and some you don’t 😉

hope the pick up goes well and your new porker gives you many years and miles of fun filled driving 🏎🤩🤪
