Cayman R Chat

Just had a thought…. I am looking for an R and chances are that I probably won’t take it on the track so would it be wrong or a waste getting an R and should I consider an S?

welcome thoughts chaps….

i bought an R just over a year ago and even if life had been normal I had no intentions then nor in the future to track it. I see it as best in class of its model range. Sure, I may not be getting the most out of it, but that doesn’t stop my emotional connection (and self pride in ownership) to be any less than those who track their R’s.

Track or no track, even parked up, there is something rather special about the R that an S could never match… it’s aura. Make of that what you will…..whatever works for you and how it makes you feel is all that matters.
Ownihg an R isn’t a competitive club. Like with a Marshall Stack amplifier, you don’t have to have it on volume 11 and only play Van Halen solos, there is as much enjoyment to be had when it is dialled back and other styles are played.…. ‘exhilaration’ is a state of mind and not a one size fits all answer, hence why some people can fall asleep on fair ground rides.

Life it short, go for the R if you can!

Hi Julian, completely understand and relate to what your saying. Thank for reminding me as now with no car and not a lot of R’s around to choose from I think started to loose my way a little.

I have always said and gone by, when you have parked up your car, where ever that be and walk away. It should make you turn back and take a look. Similarly when walking up to it, should put a smile on your face.

If this does not happen then you have the wrong car or if you stop, then it’s time to change up.

Hell, there are times even now when I simply make a cuppa and just sit in my car. Just taking a little time out, appreciating the space, the interior and being happy. Didn’t even start the engine!

Agree that owning an R isn’t being about being competitive. I’d like to think that all Cayman owners are if similar minds and would appreciate an R when seen and actually even get a little excited. I know I do!

Again, Thank you mate 🙂

I must say in the short time of joining this forum, it’s great. People such as you like are very helpful and even though I don’t have a 987 yet make me feel part of the community.

The R doesn't actually have the ideal geo setup out of the factory for track.  It's definitely setup for the road in stock form though.

Where you choose to drive it isn't all that relevant, the main point is that you drive it. ;)

I'd cook my brakes if I tracked it.  Also track work isn't just hard on brakes, engine, gearbox.  It can also cause PS overheating, etc.  Water pumps in these are also flaky.  Accelerated clutch wear.  They aren't a GT product out of the box.

Depends on how you drive on the track...  I've had no issues with anything beyond the standard brake and fluid abuse you get with near enough any car (except those specifically track oriented).  If you're overheating PS then you should be coming in for a cool down a lot sooner.

Sorry guys but what’s “PS”? 🤔

I was wondering the same, but I'm guessing it's Power Steering?

On tracking it, I have had 0 issues with my 2.9. Fresh brake fluid and relatively fresh pads/discs and you'll be fine. I drive it as hard as I can.

Accelerated wear, sure, but I'm very on top of maintenance, and the experience on track for me is so different to driving on the road that it's definitely worth it for me.

Yes, I'm going to do some light track work with mine but it'll be one fast lap then a moderate one, rinse and repeat.

A sensible approach if you can stick to it 😜

And you raise a good point, the whole point of the track is that you can go as hard you want to, so you can explore the limits of the car even if you're not gunning it all the time.

Like many others, I had little intention of tracking the car when I got it, but it has been the most rewarding aspect of ownership for me. Other's might not gel with track work, and will get more enjoyment from other aspects of ownership, but I would encourage you all to give it go.

Choose your day wisely though, I have done 2 days at Castle Combe with 'Lotus on Track' so far. They were very well organised, 2 seater sports cars only, other drivers were courteous and numbers out on track were limited. There were times when I literally had the track to myself. I may not have had such a positive experience if my first day had been on a packed track with £2k Clio 182s dive bombing me into corners. On that note, be sure to check the insurance implications too!

Yes, we're pretty lucky here in NI as it's a tight knit place. I should be able to get a two hour slot with a total of six cars on a really nice track here midweek next month (friend knows the owner). There's also excellent Porsche Club Ireland track days at Mondello outside of Dublin. We're planning to host our own up at Kirkistown in NI next spring. Either way, I've no interest in thumping around for 15 min sessions avoiding Clios as you say. There's specific things I want to explore.

PDK, comfort seats, great colour, PSE, AC, fully loaded, reputable dealer and a mileage that won't put you off driving it.

Lol, cheers actually beat you to it. I was down at Ashgood yesterday and saw this coming in. It’s gorgeous.

Test drive was flawless in terms of the car, performance, ride quality and general fit and finish of the car.

However during discussions left ass muscle went tight and ended up with sciatica which put things on hold.

went back and checked the seat adjustments and couldn’t find a tilt for the base and I think this is the issue.

Left gutted and trying to find out if there are any other seats I can find with this adjustment or what I can do to fix this.

The car is mint, not sure how it’s priced but it’s got all the bits I would want and more. Just don’t wanna be in pain and this limit the enjoyment of driving which was the case in my old car.

looking for possible solutions and any help would be greatly appreciated

Oh what a drag. I am sorry to hear that. Give Garry a call at http://classicfx.net/ as he specialises in seat mods - admittedly trimming -  but he is well regarded and he might have some ideas/solutions for customers he has dealt with such requirements....extra lumbar pads perhaps? I bet he'll be able to advise.

Spoke to Gary, lovely chap but quite busy and not really sure whether he could help.

So now stuck but sure as poo know I want a 987. So thinking… maybe spend half the money and pick up a base or S as a test bed to then try different seats, custom work etc?

Also just to be clear this is about cost due to this issue, the switch to a base or S Cayman is not meant in any negative way. Not out to offend anyone here.
