Hi Julian, yes that is a nice one and an S too! I will go down there next week and have a look.

you might want to consider getting down there tomorrow as things seem to be selling within a day or two. Looking at their website so many are reserved.

Just read that Julian…I’m not liking what I’m reading, have I actually bought a dog?! Maaan, this is feeling a little worrying.

Did it all correct too. I guess we will have to see. Come to think of it, it did take a fraction longer to start yest too. I may we’ll be down my local Porsche Indy sooner than I though. Damn.

The part isn't hugely expensive (in Porsche terms), the bosch branded one will be the OE Porsche branded one but without a Porsche part number. I think labour wouldn't be too bad either as its accessible from the the top engine hatch.

You might find that an indie advises that it's something else or no problem at all of course. You might ask your PPI for a refund at least if there is an issue though!

I couldn't find a youtube video on it, but for the 996 and Boxster, replacing the MAF looks straight forward, and by that I mean a Porsche Indie won't be charging the earth to do it.

i remember when I bought my 944 Turbo and it was running badly, and it was only a sensor along these lines that cured it. It'll be fine I'm sure.

With my R purchase, even though I had an official Porsche PPI, I took it for a once over at AutoFarm. Could be worth doing that anyway.

Thanks a lot, yeah, I will definitely be asking for a refund if there is something - PPI should have picked it up! Hopefully no problem at all like you say.

Thanks Julian, I’ve just enquired with AutoFarm actually on your recommendation and will be up that way mid July so could work out nicely. That’s a great idea. If it is the MAF then sounds like it will be fine.

At the end of the day they’re an oldish car so there will be stuff that crops up. I bought mine from Mortimers in Feb, collected at start of March without having seen it. It was a lockdown thing where I was unsure about committing to the GR Yaris I’d got arriving, so when that was a couple of days from the dealers I cancelled the order. Friday after work, got on used Porsche finder and there was a 718 base cayman in graphite blue which I really like, got some numbers and the gfv was measly so thought why not fish at the end of the scale where there’s less room for value to fall. The 2.9 987 had just been listed, ideally I’d have preferred PSE and heated seats, but liked that it had one owner, chrono, red bits and some carbon. Had a call back from them early Friday eve, said I’d think about it, got to about 10pm on the Saturday after some wine and sent a text saying hold it and I paid deposit on the Monday. (So basically I did all the wrong buying things 😂

Issues in 3 months, my climate control stopped chilling. Took it for inspection to Zuffenhaus on Friday, couldn’t find any leaks, so put some dye in and a re-gas. Inspection found one tie rod end has play, I haven’t noticed through driving but am getting both sides done then a four wheel alignment in a couple of weeks. I did speak to Mortimers about the aircon and they were fine about getting it sorted, but I wanted an inspection anyway so the regas cost was an easier option due to the fact I live miles away from them.

so, I’m summary, I could have saved a couple of grand by buying private but I’d have probably found it more hassle and therefore maybe not have been as impulsive and my drive might not have a lovely looking cayman on. I think they’re the best looking, modern enough car you can get for the money

Good on you Blissya…how was your experience with Mortimers? I wanted to buy from there initially but found it a bit abrasive.

I need to do the same I think on the geometry alignment, mine pulls to the left slightly. How much you expecting for all that and how much was your inspection?

I guess your right stuff is to be expected….just a little sour taste when it’s a week into my ownership! Haha.

you can’t go wrong with AutoFarm, a highly respected Indie. And if it it a lovely day weather wise, it’s a great place to go for a countryside walk whilst out there and they have office space if you want to work from there during the day, and a lunch area, plus the twenty plus vintage Porsches they have there. An amazing place; it’s more like a nice day out rather than taking ones car to a garage.

Sounds good fun, always a good excuse to look round some classics. I haven’t decided or found the Indy near me I will have as my ‘local’ yet as so fresh to ownership but since I’ll be up in Cotswolds anyway, AutoFarm isn’t a million miles away. Do you mind me asking how much the inspection set you back? Perhaps they could also do my alloys at the same time and a cheeky detail too 😬

I can’t recall now exactly but it coincided with when a minor service was due thereabouts. I think it was 200 300 quid, somewhere around that mark.

Part of the reason was also, as I may have mentioned before, the official Porsche PPI seemed more focussed on them trying to get a warranty out of me and it left me a bit confused. Seemed like even if a lightbulb had been replaced that wasn’t from Porsche then in their minds it was the end of the world…it was all scare tactics ….so I figured I’ll take it in for a second opinion and it wasn’t far off when the next service needed to I combined the two together.

I’d heard about AutoFarm from another R owner who said that in comparison to RPM they are next level again. I am sure RPM are amazing, just that AutoFarm is, as I say, like a day out at a Porsche museum in the beautiful countryside … and they had some serious Porsches there at the time.

Don't be thinking like that.

These cars are getting on so expect a few things to need work.  There's actually alot of 'ancillary' things you can train up to do yourself and that's a huge part of the car ownership fun once you get into it.  It will also avoid the panic stations when stuff starts to go wrong...funny noise etc as you might know what's actually causing it..

Yes, know what you mean, nobody wants niggles straight off but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

I found Mortimer’s fine to deal with, good at returning calls etc. Knowing what I know now, I think the plugs should have been done as part of the sale service, but hey ho.

the ZH inspection is £72 I think, seems reasonable and nice bloke to deal with, the location should work ok for me too. I think the part is £140 ish but have decided to do the other side at same time. Can’t recall exact amount for geo as they have it done at a third party. I’m going with it just to save me a separate visit elsewhere, but the guys at String Theory garage are great, they did some tweaks on my Mk2 golf last week.

Hmmmm…nothing in the PPI about it either. What is the MAF?

Mass Air Flow meter. If you have an OBD reader which can do live data, you can sometimes see if it is failing. I'm not sure what the idle airflow ought to be for a 2.9 but failing MAFs will often show zero or work slowly/intermittently.

Is it actually a noticeable stutter or just a barely percetible change in idle speed?

Also, who did the PPI? If it was somebody reputable/experienced then I would guess that they didn't feel as though it was anything to be concerned about.

Removing/cleaning/replacing the MAF is a straight forward operation but you do need a TT20 tamper proof Torx bit to remove it, which is a PITA as they aren't always that easy to source

I spoke to the place I got my PPI done today - RPM Specialist in Harrogate - and they said they would call me back after speaking with the mechanic who did it. It’s odd, as they gave me a report with rev checks on it but no notes about the engine. Apparently the guy took it down the road twice and would have reported anything untoward. But then they were really busy and squeezed me in on the day and so I worry it wasn’t thorough now.

Hopefully you’re right, and they aren’t concerned. But it’s a noticeable stutter, very regular too. Every 3-5 seconds and shakes the car a bit.

I’m now looking into getting another Indy to do an inspection and look into it – AutoFarm or Parr – but very frustrating as it’s not the only thing they would have missed. There were a few other bits. I get they’re older cars and maintenance to be expected! But it’s more that these are things I’d hoped to go into the negotiation knowing, as I couldn’t view it in person.

Maybe have a read of this thread. Sounds like it is quite normal. I've never noticed it on the porsches I've owned but that is not to say that it isn't normal.
