Doug's Gen 2 987 Cayman S

First 1000 miles under the belt. ?

So I had a very successful day at Bedford on Monday. The car performed very well and handled nicely, I was really quite surprised how good the PASM was on track. I picked up some 18" Cayman S wheels last week, had Potenzas on the rear and sport contact 3s on the front. Both front and rears a little past there best, but performed really well.

It will come as no surprise to anyone that it was the brakes that really let the car down. I could only do three laps each outing (out lap, fast lap, cool down) before the pedal was going looooong. I knew this would be the case, but I wanted to know how the car performs as 'stock' so improvements can be measured with the butt dyno on future outings. The only thing I added before the track were some GT3 brakes ducts. I'll be adding some new disks, race fluid, and either RS29 or DS1.11 pads for the next outing at Silverstone on 5th Nov. I'm assuming the standard disk is perfectly capable of handling the punishment on track, but I notice on Euro car parts there is a performance disk option (sebro). Does anyone have any experience with them?

The other thing that I noticed is that the traction control seems to stay on even when switched off (albeit in a much-reduced fashion). Is there any way of switching it fully off?

In other news, the car had a full 2 stage machine polish and Gtecnique ceramic coat. Plus some new stone guards, decals, and black rear wing. Very happy with the result, she looks brand new. The weather is currently testing the hydrophobic coating, I'll get some photos if it ever stops raining.

Good to hear you're enjoying the Cayman.

For Brakes: Yep this is a common gripe with tracking a 987.  GT3 mast cylinder is a must have for regular tracking and so is high temp race fluid.  But the standard discs don't last when using race pads, I have cracked 4 discs on the same set of PFC race pads. Just purchased Sebro slotted discs for the rear and PFC race disc for the front to solve this.

Traction control: I asked Porsche Centre to completely remove it when I turn it off but they said no, fair enough. My issue was on a very hot day the rear brakes are applied slightly when accelerating under high G, result was rear temps were 50C degree hotter than the front and cracked the disks.

Thanks for the info, the master cylinder is on my list but didn't want to install it until I had put decent pads, and fluid in. Think I'll give the Sebro disks a try up front along with some new pads. I think I'll go DS 1.11 because I know how good they are on past cars.

There must be a way of disabling the TC, I wonder if one of the big specialists can do it on their system.

Also, can anyone tell me how to easily upload photos into the thread?? It seems there is a 100KB limit on photo uploads.

Nice one @Dougle_turbo!

I am looking at Sebro discs too (and Ferodo DS2500 pads) -- so far I have installed the GT3 ducts and braided cables alogn with new fluid

Here they sell front and rear slotted https://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766.sf/sec0d3ecb565f/?ObjectPath=/Shops/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766/Products/8357

If you wait for Euro car parts to do a 50% sale (normally every couple of days) the Sebro slotted discs are only £160 inc VAT for a pair. ?

What braided lines did you get?

Oh that's good to know - I'll keep an eye on those!

Could you link me to the page for the Sebro's on ECP? I can't seem to find it..

The only way is sports chrono option I believe - it’s the one really annoying issue with these cars!

Interesting, I wondered what else sports chrono does. I believe it can be retrofitted. Any idea what else it does for manual cars?

GT3 mc is a great upgrade for feel but it cannot improve overall brake effectiveness or performance on track. Heat is the issue here due to small discs, cracks can be avoided by cool down laps I find but older discs will eventually crack whatever you do. Decent higher temp brake fluid is must for the track.

There is a mod for PSM fully off but it involves removing some dash cutting a wire and fitting a switch to ground, there is more info on planet 9 about it. I've not done it yet but will once my LSD is fitted.

Afaik Sports Chrono on a manual car sharpens throttle response and loosens the PSM a little more but still not completely off. Sharper throttle response can also be achieved through a sprint booster.

Nice car O/P.

Thanks! Really enjoying the car.

I've gone ahead and ordered new Sebro grooved disks for the front, Brembo drilled rear with DS1.11 pads all round, along with braided lines and race fluid, that should improve things. Once I see how that feels I'll almost certainly get a GT3 mc, but I like to take it one step at a time so I can judge if the change/upgrade has actually improved anything.

Does Sports chrono effect the amount PSM cuts in when the PSM is switched 'off'? Or does it only loosen the PSM compared to a standard car when PSM is left switched on? I'm assuming the later. I'd be interested in an update once you have the LSD and PSM deactivation work done.

Does anyone have recent experience of the sprint boosters?

I put one on my CR and it was fantastic, doesn’t change the PSM but livens up the throttle and helps reduce the flat spots.  Reviewed it in my thread and also discussed here..

I love the look of your car, and your detailing result looks fantastic ?

its inspired me to put new side vent grilles on my xmas wish list from SWMBO and the kids so I  can get them painted gloss black ???

id go for the R style side decals too, but I want to do that with a paint correction and detail, ceramic coat and protective film application, which won’t be till the cars 10th birthday ?
