987S.2 Advice Sought

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm a noob from Swansea looking for some guidance on a Cayman S gen2. Originally I wanted a Z4M coupe but I've struggled to find good ones for sensible money, and having had two 986S boxsters I think the Porsche is the better option.

I've heared so much online about the gen1 issues but very little on the 2. I'm assuming that something must be it's Achilles heel so can anyone help me?

I'm looking to buy an earlier manual car so 2009/10 they seem value at £21-23k.

Cheers,

Pete.

The DFi engine of the Gen 2 resolves the engine woes of the Gen 1 but some care points still need to be considered. E.g the front radiators collecting dead leaves and the bonnets can corrode where the steel latch is bolted on.

Right, the deal is done but I've got one niggle I'd like to check and can't...

the car has a sport design wheeling wheel in suede, and paperwork showing it being fitted.

what I can't tell is why it was fitted. Cosmetic upgrade? (It had the Porsche exhaust fitted at the same time) or worst case the airbag went off and it needed a new one... if I wanted to repair one I'd refit the oem airbag rather than change the wheel.

i rang the OPC who fitted but they quoted data privacy laws to me, which they are wrong about in my view I'm not asking for personal info unless they consider the car to be a living being, but would only confirm the servicing work.

any thoughts?

Definitely a decent upgrade.  The airbags are a separate unit and would be replaced without needing a whole new wheel in the event of it being deployed.

The Sport Design wheel wrapped in Alcantara is a desirable upgrade! It’s slightly smaller and far nicer than the triangular centered standard wheel IMO.

Nice work!

As Beanoir said a desirable upgrade. Really nice wheel and feels a lot nicer that standard wheel. I was fortunate enough that my car came speced with wheel and the paddle change. So looks like a positive to me.

Looks good with the sports design wheel and sports exhaust.

I dont think it’s got the PCM sat nav unit looking at the interior photos. But if built in sat nav isn’t a ‘must have’ for you then it’s not a deal breaker / maker.

Nice looking in black for sure. What service history and receipts does it have with it?

eg - brakes (pads & discs) done ‘recently’ at that mileage?

Yeah it's not got pcm but to be honest even the Porsche unit of that era won't have what I want so I'm going to fit an android auto unit with DAB, USB and use google maps.

Only two options I would have liked were the leather dash and sports seats, but having tried both seats I found the biggest difference in looks.

PASM would be a nice to have but if I wanted to drive on track I'd rather put money into a refresh of the whole suspension with Bilstein PSS9/10.

its had new discs, pads and tyres within the last 12-18 months so all good there.

im distance buying so it'll be the first time I'm seeing the car, is there any way I can easily confirm for 100000% sure it's got the dfi engine other than the bodywork differences?

I’ve just recently fitted a Pioneer SPH-130DAB unit with all those gubbins and I’m very impressed with it - miles ahead of the Porsche PCM or any OEM head unit of that era to be fair.

You can lift the engine cover off and check.  There's an obvious difference between the 987.1 and 987.2 engines:

.1:

.2:

(See attached)

Get the tailgate up, remove the carpet/sound absorption material, undo the torx bolts and lift the engine cover off.  Takes about 5 minutes for a novice to do.  T10 torx, if I recall.

Great news re tyres and brakes (was it discs too, not just pads)? Rear discs tend to pit and corrode on the inside surface.

Similar to you I ‘ummed and arrred’ over standard vs sport design seats.

When i I sat in both i preferred the less restrictive shoulder area on the standard seats, as lovely looking as the sport design ones are.

Ive done a few long trips (ie 500mile drive in a day to Scotland)  in my standard seats and found them to be very comfortable, sufficient adjustment etc.

I’ve only found them a little ‘lacking’ on track when I ‘slide’ about in them with harder cornering. But to mitigate that you’d really need the buckets and a harness.

I found one with full

leather interior and it does ‘lift’ the quality/premium feel within the cabin. But once you’re driving the nuts off the car I’m not aware of the contrast stitching cos I’m having too much fun being involved in the drive 😉😁👍🏻

Plus - you have the best steering wheel, which is a constant contact point between you and car, so worth way more in driver enjoyment than a leather dash.

And you have PSE, which adds to the aural experience, again making the drive more enjoyable.

Re PASM - a great option, but on U.K. potholed roads I found the sport setting too crashy. No doubt it’s of benefit on track, but like you say a good compromise would likely be a passive suspension upgrade.

Here again, for ‘fun’ track time I’ve found the standard passive suspension adequate. And it’s nice to explore and learn the cars levels of (normal) grip etc on standard susp’ In a ‘safe’ track environment. Obviously if you’re looking to ‘set records’ / ‘beat the rest’ on tracks then a track focussed suspension would be better...

You could always have an independent survey / inspection done on the car - ie RAC.

or employ a local reputable independent - RPM Specialist Cars are based on Yorkshire (NB - these are a different company to RPM Technik in Herts/Bucks).

https://www.rpmspecialistcars.co.uk/

And if it’s not right, walk away. Don’t rush, there’s always another car waiting for you... 👍🏻😉

I looked at about 8-10 (S, non-S, PDK/manual, with/without PASM) before I found ‘the one’.

Good luck

Thanks again for the advice. The car is being inspected on Friday morning so that'll be the clincher. Fingers crossed they say it's a good one and I'll be on my way to collect on Saturday.

Excited is an understatement!

i find leather is too slippery whatever the seat. I have Tillett B5s in my other car which are superbly grippy so know what you mean.

For a daily driver I think they will be fine.

I might track the car once or twice just to say I've done it, but I have a car which is 80/20 track used as well as a share in a car being built for time trialling, so again I think I'll be happy as-is until things wear out and I'll look to upgrade while replacing (easier without PASM).

The wheel and exhaust are nice things to have to make the car feel more of an event, but if the car isn't the one then I'll continue the search...
