Cayman s gen 1 buying advice

I'm currently looking for a cayman s gen1. I've viewed 4 so far. I'm aware of all the pitfalls.

Two 2007 caymans had a ticking noise at idle but no smoke. The other 2 were 2008 limited edition models with no audible ticking but one had some smoke which cleared. Is the ticking noise an issue on these as it seems a bit hit and miss. Were gen 1 2008 engines changed in anyway

Also one on 62k miles would require a clutch does £1200 to £1500 at an indy sound about right for this job.

thanks

if the Gen 1 sports edition, just note the CO emissions on that model are through the roof and as a result the tax is higher than even an R.

Pretty sure its the same as a standard S £565

Yep it'll add up over time. £250 more road tax the 1st Gen Sport Edition over an R. But thhat link has educated me that also some S's and Base are £565.00 tax a year. Thats odd huh.

This one is very nicely specced.

this looks good, and from a reputable dealer

This one has the rare leather dash and extended leather options in a great British Racing Green. Love that. I bet in real life that looks stunning

Considered those? those 3 are lovely Gen 1s. Best of the current crop in my eyes.

Yellow car is ludicrously over priced. Which is why it's been for sale forever. And it's a 2.7.

Red car is a 2.7.

Green car is not a gen one. It's a gen two.

But apart from that, yeah, great range of options for someone asking about the gen one 3.4! There are actually some very nice gen one 3.4s for sale right now. Those aren't them.

LOL. Ok my filtering in AutoTrader didn't quite work out there! Still, the yellow is the one.

£23k...for the yellow car?!

I reckon the green one would look fab sat slightly lower on decent wheels - HRE or poss even something weiss gold , ( not normally my bag but on green then possibly )..

yep the green one is smokin. It is a beauty. The cabin will feel super premium with all the extended leather and dash. That is the best one. Albeit not meeting your brief.

Moose, please don't bring your grievances on here.

my local specialist has told me to walkaway from ones that tick/tap. Probably the best approach to the untrained eye.

Shame they are great cars but a £15k car could easily turn into £25k one. Shame gen 2 are slim pickings at £20k.

Search continues....

Of the Gen 1 era this looks like a great Cayman
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2009-porsche-987-cayman-s-sport

Number 427 of just 700 built, this is understood to be one of just 69 UK-market examples of the Cayman S Sport.

Surely thats the one! Best one I have seen in years.

I waited until a low mileage 987.1 came on the market,  when a 32K car appeared I pounced.  At 10.00 in the morning I was fitting a downstairs loo, at 10.01 I got a search alert from Ebay,  at 12.00 i was in Sheffield trading in my Z4.

I had the bores checked recently and there is absolutely no sign of damage what so ever.  If you are sold on a 3.4 987.1 I'd wait until something with super low miles came on the market.

  • 3 weeks later...

I recently put my Gen1 S (Speed Yellow) up for sale on Carandclassic , I've just put a deposit down on a Hawk 289 Cobra kit so thought the money would be useful

It's totally mint , original tyres , less than 23k miles , black interior , yellow belts , manual ,  19" Sport Design wheels (like new) ....it really is like a new car and it goes like nothing I've driven. Advert wasn't very good as to be honest I didn't really want to sell it...deep down anyway

Well my mate was looking for a new toy and we agreed at £20k ....until tonight that is ..when I took it for a blast up our valley and I thought "I must be insane selling this" ..what car can you get for £20k that does what this does (in this condition) ??  Also my kit won't be ready for 18mths so I'd be toy-less for all that time.

So now I've got to tell him (tonight) I don't want to sell it anymore , but I will help him find a really good one regardless

They're amazing little cars and if you get a good one it'll be hard to beat
