New Cayman lots of noises…

Hi all, I just purchased my first CS! Test drove and PPI done and all was good. On the way home I noticed a whine that drowns out everything else. Most noticeable around 3k rpm. Changes with the rpms and disappears at idle. You can hear it reving in neutral though. The belt was worn and my mechanic said the intentioned pulley was a bit loud so I replaced both. No difference in the whine. I took the belt off and tested the noise with no change. Sometimes after about 30-40 minutes of driving, it lessens but doesn’t go away. The power steering reservoir was bone dry. I refilled it, but whine is still there. The other issue I’m having is a low speed clank. Seems to happen sub 20mph going through the neighborhood. Random. 1st and second gear, straight or turning, on and off clutch. Doesn’t seem to make the noise going over bumps. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

In no way am I any kind of expert, and listening to your video I can't say it's 100% the same, BUT my 987S whines all the time. It is more noticeable at 2-4,000 rpm, after that I think it's just drowned out by the engine. I've perused numerous forums and taken it to two independent specialists (for other things, but asked them about it while I'm there) and the upshot seems to be "987s make that noise". No idea what it is, when I first bought the car I really noticed it and it kinda ruined the whole experience a bit to be honest. But yeah, that's my two pence. Might reassure you if nothing else!

Don't know about the clank...

As I said on the planet-9 forum, the clank is probably drop links or tuning forks (either front or rear depending on the source of the sound). The whine is likely just the fact that the belts and pulleys are about 2 inches from your back versus about 3 foot, a load of carpet, a steering wheel, and a windscreen in a normal car.

Sort out the suspension and then enjoy the car.

Another vote for nothing being wrong with the belt whine. 987's are noisy; most of the noises in the belt videos are what I'd write down to "happy mechanical whirring". That said, since you have the cover off, a visual inspection of the belt and the wheels (and a poke/prod) wouldn't hurt.

I'm not quite getting the clunk noise from the first video, though.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the reply’s! Been driving and enjoying.  I’ll get the clank checked out for sure. I had a thought about the clank. There is a balancing weight connected to a control arm on the trans that is a bit loose and squeaky… anybody had any experience with it?

I second Lenny - the clank sounds like a drop link, or control arm (front or rear).

i had a similar noise in mine earlier this year and it was the rear right control (aka ‘coffin’) arm.

get a mate to stand outside the car whilst you drive at slow speeds in forward and reverse over some sort of ‘sharp’ speedramp - they might hear the metallic ‘clank’ and at least pin point if it’s occuring when you’re front or rear axle travels over the bump / ramp.

happy motoring 👍🏻

I used to get very hung up on even the smallest perceptible 'strange' noise on cars I've owned.  And most of the time no one else could hear it but me.

But when you think about how many different moving parts there are in a modern combustion engine, arguably it would be weirder if they all did sound exactly the same.

Thanks again for all the feedback!

so as an update I’ve found that the clutch master cylinder is leaking. Saw a drip on the pedal and traced it back up the the master.  Ordered a new one and a power bleeder.

I'd recommend checking out the threads on here about changing/upgrading the MC to a GT3 unit, if only to take heed of the issues that can be experienced (and how to resolve them) when bleeding the brakes, as you will need to activate the ABS pump.

Yes, your Power Steering reservoir being empty is never a good sign.. At least you found the reason. Strange PPI didn't spot that....

That’s a great idea. I’ll definitely upgrade when I get to the brakes.

Sorry just realised you were referring to the clutch rather than the brake MC, I think I must have brakes on the mind having recently swopped mine over! 😁

Don’t the clutch and brakes use the same master cylinder though, and the clutch also has a slave cylinder?🤔

or have I just made that up completely… 🤷‍♂️

Errr....

They use the same reservoir if that's what you mean
