"Cheap" GT3 Master Cylinder

Recommended Posts

So almost 4 months after I bought it, I finally got around to fitting the gt3 MC today. The install was dead easy but bleeding it was a bit tedious and I ended up going round the car about 4 times (with a few emergency stops in between).

The brake feel is now fantastic. No dead travel at all and much more positive feeling. It actually feels as though you are once again directly connected to the brakes.

I have absolutely no idea why this wasn't fitted from the factory. It feels better in every way and there are no discernible downsides.

All in all, it has done exactly what I was hoping it would do

Glad to hear Lenny. Quite some cheap upgrade isn’t it 👌👍

Cost (possibly) 🤔

And to keep the Caysters ‘beneath’ 911s most likely...🤨

But yep, a great performance mod 👍🏻

Total no brainer to add the bigger MC from off the shelf for those cars. Would have cost basically nothing to fit that MC rather than the other one at the point of manufacture and deliver a useful upgrade and absolutely the right character for those cars. But they didn't, probably because it's the sort of detail change that wouldn't impress in a press release etc.

Having now tried both (normal and GT3) it certainly feels like a weird choice to have not specced it. As you say, the additional cost would be negligible and from an "experience" point of view it is quite transformative. In my opinion it's not even as though the standard MC makes the brakes feel more accessible/modern... it just makes them feel kind of crap and distant.

The brake feel on the 986 was very good and so its hard to understand why they went in this direction for the 987

Cost. The smaller M/C contains less brake fluid. Imagagine the savings multiplied by thousand and thousands of cars!  :)

Very, very cheap on WS Autoteile at the moment (direct website of the eBay seller in the first post), but they don't ship to the UK currently 😤

Still, for anyone in the EU or with a forwarding address set up: https://www.ws-autoteile.com/en/brakes/main-brake-cylinder/TRW-PMN166-Hauptbremszylinder-Bremszylinder-HBZ-PORSCHE-997-99735591030_A09513W810

Edit - for a historical reference point price is €82.00 today.

Hi all,

so I have got my master MC on but...there is always a but...

I got a od nois when pushing down the pedal (on passenger side) so I told to the mechanic to take a look.

The response is that I have got the caliper seized so he could not even bleed properly the system...and the pedal is even worse than before for this reason.

He said that the caliper and pads need to be replaced.

Did it happen to someone of you as well? Second hand caliper, is a "good" choice? Any suggestion?

Where is the noise coming from? When you have trapped air in the MC, it can make strange sounds (air trying to escape from the tank).

Is your mechanic a Porsche specialist? The bleeding process is long and arduous and I had to bleed it multiple times (from both nipples) to get all the air out. The "seized" cylinder could just be air trapped in the line going to that cylinder (so that the air is being compressed instead of the cylinder being pushed out as it should).

Where is your car now? I can lend you my pressure bleeder, scanner, 11mm spanner, and heavy braking leg if you fancy doing it yourself (and don't trust your mechanic...and without seeing it myself he may well be correct).

Thanks, the car is at home now but I was hearing the noise before changing the MC.

I told him to take a look at it because it was already noisy.

He is not a Porsche specialist.

I would not do it by myself...I am not able to look at it, unfortunately.

In theory on Monday I will drop the car to him and sen the caliper out to these guys http://www.biggred.co.uk/.

Thanks. My only concern is import duty and vat post-Brexit.

A few people on boxa.net told me that I was being overly pessimistic and a typical reMoaner naysayer when I bought one pre-Dec 31st (my rationale being that come January there would be duties to pay one way or another) but in hindsight I think it was the right choice. I notice that a lot of the German parts sellers are no longer shipping to the UK.

Completely off topic but where in Oxford are you? I'm in one of the villages out towards Witney and the only Caymans I ever see are a red 987.2 and occassionally a white one with "P O R S C H E" letters on the boot (plus a tidy silver one at an Abingdon trackday)

If you are not in a rush and can wait a bit, we can arrange a delivery in Italy (at my parents house) and have it posted here. You have to pay for a double postage but maybe is going to be convenient anyway...

If interested just send me a private message.

Thank you, that's very kind. I have friends in Sweden so may well avail myself of their kindness!
