Proper on every level. Love it ! ***I can feel the genuine enthusiasm in your posts too. ENJOY !
GlosRich
I like the wheels, the are period appropriate for the car. Maybe some black and silver centre caps, I prefer them to the coloured crests. I reckon it could do with a 'Carrera' script on the boot lid also, maybe a black one.

Nonetheless this car is truly gorgeous @Beanoir and sounds great too!!

I'm with @GlosRich on the wheels, I think they look excellent as they are. Wheels make a car in my opinion but they are also in the eye of the beholder so it will have to be your choice ultimately and some will share your liking and others won't!
Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted July 19, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted July 19, 2020 The car came fitted with Yokohama AD08R which are great for track work apparently, but they’re so noisy on the road, it sounded like I had transmission rumble! So yesterday I treated the car to a new set of Michelin’s, PS4 as I can’t get the PS4S in the correct sizes. Made a HUGE difference! Decided the gear stick was looking a bit tatty, and at nearly £1,000 for a new one I decided I’d do something different. I’ve got wider plans for the interior so thought I’d start here. I’m going to ditch my knob completely as it’s looking a bit old, and Louise commented on the fact it also smells...stay focused!! I’ve got loads of genuine Alcantara left over from a previous project and it’s the same shade used by Porsche. I don’t want to cover the interior in the stuff but some choice areas. So the gear stick gaitor is one such place. No going back now.. I need to use the old parts as a pattern, cut the Alcantara to size. Louise has an industrial type sewing machine that does leather and all sorts. So sewing the Alcantara is pretty easy. I decided silver stitching will be a theme I’m going to run with throughout. I didn’t like the silver bezel, so I vinyl wrapped it gloss black. Next step is assembly, with my fresh knob and another added feature...in next weeks episode
Popular Post TritonII
So many skills in a single household - premium materials to hand, skilled seamstress, wrapping film in stock...……… I feel so humbled and inadequate! Looks really nice. I did use my snowfoam for the first time yesterday though (now that's a messy process!!) but didn't find time to use the alcantara cleaner on my gear stick gaitor. Did manage a good few hours out driving though!!
GlosRich
Looking good, some handy skills there. Never fails to suprise me how pricey Porsche gear knobs are.
Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted July 20, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted July 20, 2020 Some more progress today on ‘Project Knob’ I glued the seams and refitted the gaitor to the surround. Test fit with a new knob, paying homage to the 917 Le Mans cars Its not quite finished, I’m working on a machined aluminium sleeve to cover the shaft and bring it all together.

GlosRich
Those wooden knobs are lovely, but I think they look better on a classic 911. I've seen one on a Cayman also, looks too old school. But thats just my opinion. You're making good progress, very interesting to watch, keep up the good work.

Founder Beanoir™ Posted July 21, 2020 Author Founder Share Posted July 21, 2020 Thanks for the comments guys. I’m going for a retro look, so the gear knob is really just the start. I’m waiting on my new coffin arms, tuning forks, drop links and arb bushes to arrive - hopefully in time for the weekend. D911 seem to be one of those retailers that will happily take your money for something then email you the next day to say they’re waiting on stock!! Pisses me off! I’d like to do the shocks and top mounts but, I’d also like to upgrade to the Ohlins kit so no point if I end up doing that.

Founder Popular Post Beanoir™ Posted July 24, 2020 Author Founder Popular Post Share Posted July 24, 2020 A few goodies arrived today! Similar to the Cayman, the headlights are pretty rubbish, the dipped and main bulbs have been upgraded to Philips Racing Vision and OSRAM Nightbreakers already and are still sub-optimal. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and testing over the last couple of years on the pros and cons of LED lamps and HID kits. In my opinion, HID kits are no good for reflector headlights, and LED lamps perform better in a reflector headlights than they do in a projector headlights. However, there are LED lamps, and there are LED lamps, and by far the best I’ve come across are the Philips Ultinon Gen 2 and that’s what I’ve gone with for the 996. They're not cheap, but they are very well made and actually work properly with a good clean cut off and don't wash the road in front of the car with light and no real projection. The unfortunate truth is that LED retrofit lamps will never provide as good a projection as a halogen lamp will. For that reason, I stick with halogen bulbs in my main beam and use LED lamps in the dipped. Also some small LED lamps for the sidelights, frunk LED conversion, and interior light. Also arrived are a selection of slightly less exciting parts. Drivers side drop link, some new fasteners and fixings for the front bumper (that’s for another update), new wheel bolts, front ARB bushes and brake disc retaining screws. Jobs for the weekend! Managed to get out for my local village car club meet this week, nice to finally get to a car meet, seems like forever since the last time!
